Small gestures can avoid problems in episodes like the Amazon one
Monday 20th, thousands of services that depend on storing information from the AWSfrom the Amazonis no longer available to users due to a computer blackout that lasted more than 16 hours.
Node BrazilTHE PicPay, MercadoPago, iFood AND Free market were some of the main people affected. In events like these it is important to be able to count on other types of services, which use cloud sources from different brands. For example, leaving money in banks that use alternative systems. This way, in an episode like this, you can access your bank account and make payments without suffering.
The blackout caused turbulence around the world, in several industries, because AWS is one of the largest data servers in the world. According to the consultancy Gartnerthe company holds 37% of the global market share.
This means that much of the internet depends on it to function, from social networks and games to banks and online shops. Therefore, when AWS services fail, the impact is immediate and visible to millions of users, especially since the company is ahead of competitors like Microsoft Azure AND GoogleCloud.
The effect becomes even greater because many companies share the same AWS systems, so even if the outage lasts a short time, websites and apps that depend on these systems may stop working or become very slow.
Remember the causes of the blackout
According to AWS, the failure originated in servers in the US-EAST-1 region, which is located in the northern state of Virginia, USA. This is the location with the highest concentration of data centers in the world: according to the DataCenterMap website, there are almost 400 data centers in the region. Experts estimate that much of the data processed by Brazilian services occurs in Virginia.
According to Amazon, the failure began because computers were unable to connect to DynamoDB, the company’s central database in the eastern region of the United States. Since many applications and services depend on it, the unavailability caused several systems hosted in the AWS cloud to go down.
DynamoDB is an enterprise database used in the cloud to store information that applications and services need to access. Unlike traditional databases, it does not organize data into rows and columns, but more flexibly, allowing large volumes of information to be stored efficiently.
Because it is fast and scalable, it is used by several AWS services to store data that needs constant access, such as application configurations, user data, or event logs.
In addition to DynamoDB, other AWS services were also affected by the outage. EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud), used to create virtual servers, has had difficulty launching new instances in the eastern US region, causing slowdowns in systems that depend on these servers.
