Creature played by Jacob Elordi in the new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic has a detail that was left out due to the Mexican filmmaker’s choice

In Frankensteinwhich brings Jacob Elordi (Euphoria) in the role of the creature, Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) reimagines Mary Shelley’s classic from a personal perspective, moving away from the most iconic representations of the being created by Doctor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac, Moon Knight), even leaving out a classic detail.

Find out which detail of the creature the Mexican filmmaker left out of the film that Rolling Stone Brazil already seen at the 49th São Paulo Film Festival — read our review clicking here — next:

What is the story of Frankenstein?

Described by Del Toro as your dream project, Frankenstein adapts the classic story of Mary Shelley about creating a monster with parts from different corpses. In addition to Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight), Mia Goth (Pearl), Charles Dance (game of Thrones), Lars Mikkelsen (House of Cards), David Bradley (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone) and Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth) and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) are also in the cast of Frankenstein.

The detail that was left out

Del Toro decided to remove the famous screws from the creature’s neck — an almost universal symbol of the monster — to break with the idea that it was a grotesque product of a failed experiment. “We wanted it to have the purity or translucency of almost a newborn soul”, explained the director to The New York Times. “Thus, the public can follow her from birth until the moment she begins to think and exist.

The creature’s look reinforces this more poetic approach. Far from the cartoonish and cobbled-together image that cinema popularized, the new Frankenstein appears as a “handmade work of art”, according to the director. “Victor sees himself much more as an artist than a doctor“, he said del Toro. The intention was for every detail of the monster’s body to reflect this creative, almost divine impulse.

So that Elordi to transform into the creature, eight makeup artists worked for around 10 hours a day, applying 42 synthetic prosthetics, 14 of which on the face, head and neck alone, as revealed in a behind-the-scenes video released by Netflix.

When does it debut Frankenstein on streaming?

After two weeks in selected cinemas, Frankenstein will come to streaming in November 7thin the Netflix catalog. Watch the new trailer below:
