Schoolboy humor isn’t for everyone, and Jeff Daniels knows a thing or two about that! Having toured in the 80s under the direction of Woody Allen and Robert Altman, or opposite Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson or even Meryl Streep, he hesitated to take a completely different direction in his career by trying absurdist and burlesque comedy.
“I got bored of dramas and wanted to study comedy but my agents didn’t want me to do this film– recalls the actor in an interview The Guardian About the Pharrell brothers’ Dumb and Dumber, where he finally agreed to play alongside genre master Jim Carrey. When he said to himself: “Either it’s going to be such a bad decision for my career that I’ll never work again, or it’s just going to be ridiculous.”
A memorable scene…
A choice that ultimately paid off as the comedy became one of the most important of the 90s, full of amazing scenes, including a script where Jeff Daniels’ character has to rush to the toilet after drinking laxative before realizing that the toilet doesn’t flush…
“I remember getting ready to shoot a scene (…) when Jim asked me, “Hey man, how are you?” I said, I’m just scared. It’s the beginning or the end of my career.’ He told me, “Give it your all, man. Go all the way!” He couldn’t have been a better supporter.said the actor, before slyly adding:Me on this toilet, this will be the image on my tombstone.“

… for those who do not have more for everyone!
However, scatological humor isn’t to everyone’s taste, and Jeff Daniels’ dad seems to be one of those who doesn’t like it, as the actor shared, who decided to show Dumb and Dumber to his family and theater group ahead of the film’s release.
“I was sitting next to my parents, and when we got to the bathroom, my dad put his head in his hands and said, “No, Geoffrey…” Meanwhile, 5,000 people fell out of their seats laughing.– he confided. Then he continued:However, the reviews were terrible. I still have an album of 200 newspapers that deleted the film and I wish it never existed.“
But the story ended well as the film was a commercial success. “We were number 1 at the box office for six weeks in a row. It was then that I realized that we had achieved the impossible“, explained Jeff Daniels, who also agreed to shoot a sequel 10 years later.
