Warning, spoilers! This article describes elements of the film.
With Jan Koonen’s new film The Shrinking Man, Jean Dujardin tries his hand at fantasy for the first time. In this remake of the 1957 Hollywood classic, the actor plays Paul, a man, an ordinary father, the victim of an inexplicable phenomenon: he visibly shrinks.
This event, which will turn his life and those around him upside down, creates both absurd and tragic scenes. Her whole world is transformed: a pet becomes a predator, a dollhouse takes the form of a real “normal”-sized building, and the harmless spider in the basement mutates into a terrifying monster.
Different film sizes
For those who are more interested, we asked Jean Dujardin about his various sizes in the film and the road he traveled during filming.
During the first part of the film, Jean Dujardin maintains a normal height of 1.80 meters. Later sequences, when his body has changed a lot and the character confronts his wife sitting in a chair, he is only 29 centimeters.
“I used the script to figure out my size, but my clothes also helped.Jean Dujardin of AlloCiné reveals. I knew I was 10 centimeters with the poncho. Small striped sweater, then I was 8.4 centimeters. Then we’re really on to something, cash.“
In the last part of The Shrinking Man, the character no longer measures a few millimeters.
“When we see a very small man talking to someone, we immediately see his first references to The Interior Adventure or Honey, I Shrunk Kids,” explains the actor. So obviously we’re first in the fray. When in reality, for me it is more tragic.
