The Italian team driver revealed that he felt relieved when the virtual safety car stopped Verstappen’s attacks
Charles Leclerc admitted he was relieved when the virtual safety car was introduced on the penultimate lap of the Mexican Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver overtook Max Verstappen to secure second place, but acknowledged that the VSC “saved” his position at the end of the race.
“Very happy with this weekend. Austin was positive, but finishing on the podium again is a big surprise. I was very happy with the VSC at the end, my tires were running out and Max was coming in very fast,” said the Monegasque after the race.
Leclerc had a difficult start, but maintained his pace and withstood pressure from the Dutchman in the closing laps. The virtual safety car was activated after Carlos Sainz’s Williams stopped due to problems inside the stadium area, neutralizing the race at the most critical moment.
Verstappen, in turn, regretted the intervention which prevented a possible attack: “Sometimes the safety car works in your favor, sometimes against you. Today it was against you.”
Leclerc scored 18 points for the Scuderia, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton suffered a 10-second penalty early in the race. Finishing eighth, he scored just four points on his side of the garage.
