For his first series (not adapted from one of his books), Harlan Coben chose to address topics close to his heart: filial piety, father-son relationships, family secrets, and the unspoken. In Lazarus, he plunges us into the head of Joel, a forensic psychiatrist played by Sam Claflin.
After his father’s suicide, he is haunted by strange visions that he cannot explain. As a series of unsolved murders resurface, he realizes that these events may be connected to his family’s tragic past – and in particular to the brutal murder of his sister twenty-five years ago. The more he searches for answers, the more the line between the real and the unexplained blurs…
As (grandfather) father, as son
We now know the refrain with Harlan Coben. The American author unravels the thread of his story and offers us an explosive final episode full of revelations. And Lazarus is no exception.
In episode 6, we learn that it was her father, Dr. Jonathan Lazarus (Bill Nye), who killed his patients. Thanks to the help of Detective Alison Brown, they were able to implicate other people. But now comes the moment when Lazarus must finally pay for his crimes: at Brown’s request, he ends his life without leaving a farewell letter for his children.
Lazarus Jr. discovers his father’s behavior thanks to a tape given to him by a policewoman before his death. So Joel discovers the true face of his father, who makes him realize – by drawing a three-legged table – that everything is a matter of cycles and starts again. The sins of the father become the sins of the son. and vice versa.
After making this discovery, Joel goes to Laura’s house, where he runs into… Aiden, with a knife in his hand. A troubled teenager, who is none other than his son, once again asks the question of his son: the violence inherent in the family, the traumas that characterize us and the darkness that haunts them.
The ending of Lazarus is pretty open-ended, even if it answers the main questions (we know who killed Sutton and the other patients), but leaves the door open for a possible season 2. How will Joel react to this discovery? Will he protect his offspring or will he try to break the famous cycle to preserve the next generation of Lazarus?
