From the 19-minute response time to the existence of the Raven Rock bunker, learn what’s true in Kathryn Bigelow’s tense political thriller
The new thriller from Netflix, Dynamite Housedirected by Kathryn Bigelowhas left audiences on edge with its near real-time depiction of a U.S. response to an imminent nuclear attack. But how accurate is the film? Although the premise seems extreme, the production was based on extensive research, even generating an official response from the American government. Check below what is fact and what is fiction in the film:
1. The film’s accuracy and the government’s response
The screenwriter Noah Oppenheim states that the film is “quite accurate”based on conversations with experts who worked in these roles. However, the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) issued an official note disputing the plot, in which the interceptors fail. The agency claims that its actual technology has a “100% accuracy rate in testing for over a decade”. Oppenheim replied: “Unfortunately, our missile defense system is highly imperfect… what we show in the film is accurate.”
2. 19 minute response time
The film is divided into three 19-minute chapters. According to Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a missile can cross the world in about 30 minutes, but that time would be shorter if launched from a nearby submarine, making the film’s scenario plausible.
3. Can the President order an attack alone?
Yes. As shown in the film, the US president has singular authority to launch a nuclear attack, without the need for third-party approval, although the execution of the order depends on the chain of command.
4. Real Places: Fort Greely and Raven Rock
Both main locations exist. THE Missile Defense Battalion 49 in Alaska it is real and routinely trains to intercept threats. The final bunker, Raven Rock Mountain Complexin Pennsylvania, is also real and functions as a “Underground Pentagon”a self-sufficient city built inside a mountain to shelter the government in case of catastrophe.
