The Vampire Diaries: After 8 seasons and 171 episodes, how does this iconic fantasy series end? Explanation of the ending

Loosely adapted from the novel The Vampire Diaries Created by LJ Smith and Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, The Vampire Diaries was a hit on the CW in the 2010s. The charismatic trio (Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley) lead the series about a teenager whose heart is torn between two vampire brothers who are diametrically opposed to each other.

As the episodes progressed, the mythology of The Vampire Diaries developed, with werewolves and witches joining the small (not so peaceful) town of Mystic Falls. true Teen soap With a fantasy flavor, the program appeals to viewers around the world and even spawned two spin-offs, The Originals and Legacies.

how does it end

But all good things must come to an end, and The Vampire Diaries will take a bow with its final episode airing on March 10, 2017. Calm down now (I felt epic in VO). If Season 8 didn’t quite convince fans, this finale — which marked Nina Dobrev’s remarkable return after a two-year absence — still managed to bring the series to a satisfying close.

Sacrifice of one of the Salvatores

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) find themselves in front of Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) empty coffin. She appears in front of them, but Damon quickly realizes the deception: in fact, it is Katherine, Elena’s doppelganger, who hid the latter’s body at Mystic Falls High School.

Catherine, who explains that she was behind Cade’s actions, wants to have fun with the Salvator brothers before the city is destroyed. In order to save Mystic Falls, Damon, Stefan, and Bonnie (Kat Graham) realize they must direct the hellfire unleashed by Vicki and Maxwell’s call directly into the underworld while making sure Kathryn is present.

Damon volunteers to be sacrificed: he will strike Katherine and die with her, atoning for all his past sins. But Stefan gives her brother a drug in his blood that allows him to become human again. When Damon collapses unconscious, Stefan takes his place and kills Katherine. Both were engulfed in inferno in the tunnels that connect the city to the army.

So Stefan is dead, leaving Caroline (Candice King) behind. Before reaching for the light and finding Lexi (Ariel Kebbell), her best friend, she finds herself face to face with Elena’s spirit, asking her to tell Caroline that she will always love her.

Elena’s awakening

Elena comes out of her coma thanks to Bonnie, who found a way to break the spell cast by Kai (Chris Wood). After finding her best friend, Elena sees Damon again and kisses him. Then the series shows us more or less in the near future, where we find that Elena and Damon have lived happily ever after together. Elena became a doctor and continued to live in Mystic Falls.

When they die, they both find peace in the afterlife, reunited with their loved ones. Thus, Elena is surrounded by her parents, Aunt Jenna and even John Gilbert, her biological father. As for Damon, he finds Stefan.

Matt (Zach Roerig), still the town’s sheriff, considers running for city council. Bonnie decides to travel the world, while Caroline and Alaric (Matt Davis) open a school for extraordinary children with the help of Jeremy (Stephen R. McQueen).
