The mother-in-law of bank employee Bárbara Elisa Yabeta Borges, 28, who died after being shot in the head during a firefight in Linha Amarela, Rio de Janeiro, revealed that the young woman was planning to get pregnant next year and that she had recently been promoted at work.

The death occurred last Friday, the 31st, near Vila do Pinheiro, in the North Zone of Rio, a region close to the Maré Favelas Complex. On that occasion, teams from the 22nd Battalion of the Military Police (BPM) were called and, on site, they came across two victims shot dead inside a vehicle.

Bárbara was rescued and taken to the Bonsucesso Federal Hospital, but did not survive. The victim’s husband identified her whereabouts after realizing her cell phone was in the medical unit. The boy then alerted his family.

On Saturday morning, 1, Bárbara’s family went to the Medico-Legal Institute (IML) in the center of Rio to release the body. On TV Globo, Andreia Assis, the victim’s mother-in-law, spoke about the crime.

“It’s something we think we won’t experience, the girl gets shot in the head with a rifle,” he said. Bárbara was returning from Ilha do Governador heading to Cachambi, to have lunch with her mother, when she was hit inside a car.

Andreia also revealed that Bárbara had shared plans to expand her family in 2026: “She said: ‘Nun, I took out the chip. I’ll give you your grandson’. She was a great, hard-working girl who conquered her space.”

The episode of violence occurred a few days after the news of a mega police operation that caused 121 deaths in the Penha and Alemão compounds, highlighting the instability of public security in the capital Rio de Janeiro.

During the action, a rifle, ammunition and magazines were seized. The corporation command ordered the strengthening of police forces in the area to stabilize the situation. Investigations into the case are underway at the 21st Police Station (DP) of Bonsucesso.
