Filipe Luis downplays title disputes with Palmeiras and stresses that the focus is on beating Sao Paulo

The Rio team is a direct competitor to rival Alviverde in the Brasileiro and Libertadores; Saturday’s victory gives the team provisional leadership in the national tournament

Flamengo’s victory over Sport on Saturday evening (1st) added even more fuel to the rivalry of recent years between the red-black team and Palmeiras, especially after the definition of another final. Libertadores. Thanks to the triumph in Maracanathe Rio club temporarily takes over the leadership of the Brasileirão and leaves the opposing alviverde behind.

After the match, the coach Philip Luishowever, he downplayed the temporary excitement. For him it is not yet the time to think about a title, be it national or continental.

“I’m terrible at making predictions. If those who make predictions were right, football wouldn’t be fun and the bettors would be rich… and they’re all in trouble. You can never predict these things. So what we have to do is think about the next match,” replied the Flamengo coach regarding the deadline to define the Brasileirão champion.

“It’s a long way from the final (of the Libertadores), I know you want to know about the final, you want to talk about the final… the only thing I have in mind is Sao Paulo. And this is the message I gave to my players: what we have in mind is the next round.

“It’s the only thing that matters. It’s what’s within our reach, what’s in our hands, what we can do is try to beat San Paolo in the next round,” Filipe Luis reinforced.

Filipe Luis also made a point of praising the Flamengo fans for the victory over Sport. There were almost 70 thousand people present who pushed the team to the Maracanã, even if in the first half they played below expectations. In the second half, however, the team became disenchanted and Bruno Henrique found the net twice. One of the Brasileirão’s top scorers, Arrascaeta scored a beautiful free kick.

“I have no doubt that the fans were decisive for this victory. And I’ll explain why”, began the Rossoneri coach. “Because when players come on the pitch who are not at their best, like (Samu) Lino, Bruno Henrique… their confidence is not high… they didn’t receive the pressure they usually receive from Flamengo fans.”

“It is important that the fans know that they (the fans) were decisive in the recovery of the players during the match,” Filipe Luis underlined regarding the support coming from the stands. “As the minutes went by, the players improved and (Bruno Henrique) ended up scoring a goal, he regained all his confidence. Lino ended up playing well, being very important until the end of the match,” he added.

“I would like fans to understand the power and ability they have when it comes to changing a player’s performance,” he concluded.

As highlighted by Filipe Luis, Flamengo now turns its attention to the match against Sao Paulo, on Wednesday (5), in a match that will be played in Vila Belmiro, Santos.

It is worth noting that Palmeiras will take the field again this Sunday (2) in the Brasileirão, when they will face Juventude no Sul, and in case of victory they will regain their position as leaders of the Brasileirão.
