Thousands of people participated in the 34th Argentine Pride March in Buenos Aires on Saturday 1st, which ran through the center of the city with slogans in defense of LGBTQ+ rights and criticism of Javier Milei’s government.
The mobilization, called by human rights organizations and LGBTQ+ collectives, was conducted under the slogan “Confronting hatred and violence: more pride and unity”. The parade started from Praça de Mayo, in front of the Government Palace, and culminated in front of the National Congress, with speeches and shows.
“Today, with the current government, there is a lot of hatred. This is visible in the streets and on social media. So, being here to defend our rights and who we are is very positive,” Nahuel Vassallo, a 22-year-old university student, told AFP.
Since taking office in December 2023, President Milei has eliminated the Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversity, disbanded the National Institute against Discrimination, and eliminated 13 anti-gender violence programs of the Ministry of Justice, among other cuts.
“This dismantling takes place in a context of intensification of speeches that incite hatred and violence, including by the country’s highest authorities,” María Paula García, Amnesty International’s equality and diversity coordinator in Argentina, told AFP.
Hate crimes on the rise
In January, in a speech at the Davos Economic Forum, Milei said that “radical feminism” seeks “privilege” and criticized the concept of “femicide” and what he calls “gender ideology”, the “most extreme versions” of which constitute “child abuse”. Days later, thousands of people in Argentina demonstrated in disgust.
According to the National Observatory of LGBT+ Hate Crimes, hate crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people increased in Argentina by 70% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year.
The mobilization included dozens of floats from social and political organizations, filled with activists dancing and singing.
Among the crowd were families, activists, students and foreign tourists who joined the celebration, in a day of music, dance and performances by local artists.
