Harrison Ford, in the minds of millions of viewers around the world, is the embodiment on the big screen of two iconic heroes of the seventh art: Indiana Jones and Han Solo from the intergalactic saga of Star Wars. But there are many other roles, some famous and some less so…
Among the unfairly forgotten roles of Harrison Ford (who was “absolutely blown away” upon discovering the opening minutes of the sci-fi classic), is that of Inspector John Buck in The Haunting Witness. Good news: this excellent detective film, in which the actor is very convincing, is shown on Arte this Sunday night.
Opening in theaters at the Cannes Film Festival in 1985, Witness tells the story of the famous John Buck, who investigates a murder whose only witness is a young boy who is a member of the Amish community. Discovering that his boss is the instigator of this crime, the inspector takes refuge in this pacifist community.
Witness, the quality of which we will recall the quality of the director of the Australian Peter Weir (Dead Poets Circle, The Truman Show), which Harrison Ford would later return to for The Mosquito Coast, is a very good detective film, but not only that. Because at the heart of this captivating production that immerses the audience in the Amish community is also a wonderful love story between John’s character and Rachel’s character, played by Kelly McGillis (who will next be seen with Tom Cruise in Top Gun).
Harrison Ford gets the most coveted roles in Hollywood
Winner of two Oscars for its screenplay and editing, Witness is a thrilling film, a truly fine piece of cinema, enhanced by Maurice Jarre’s superb score. Proof that we need to see this movie starring the very good Harrison Ford right away? All of Hollywood wanted this piece in their filmography, from Sylvester Stallone to Jack Nicholson, Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, Clint Eastwood and Richard Gere!
A huge success in French cinemas with more than 2.2 million viewers, Witness is a little that is quickly (re)discovered. And if, in addition, you are a fan of Harrison Ford, then this is almost certain: your evening will be almost perfect!
Tonight on Arte at 9 o’clock.
