Research also shows that insecurity is higher among women, with 60% of them saying they feel less confident, compared to 44% of men. The difference also appears between age groups. Among those interviewed, 61% of young people said they were more afraid after the operation, followed by 53% of those over 51 and 48% between 31 and 50 years old.
The joint action by the civil and military police ended with 121 deaths, including four security officers, and was considered the bloodiest in the history of the state. The survey shows that 98% of the inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro were aware of the operation, which had major repercussions at a national level.
People fear a backlash against crime
In addition to the sense of insecurity, 74% of those interviewed said they feared a reaction from criminal factions after the operation. For 62%, the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro does not have the ability to fight organized crime alone. Another 36% believe so.
According to the survey, 87% of residents in the state say Rio is experiencing a war scenario, while only 13% disagree with this perception.
The population also sees a balance between the preparedness of the police force and that of the criminal factions: 48% believe that state agents are better prepared for an armed clash, while 44% point to the factions. Another 8% could not answer.
Political impact
Research indicates that the mega-operation had an impact on the rating of Governor Cláudio Castro (PL). His approval went from 43% in August to 53% after the action. Among Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) voters, the approval rating went from 49% to 82%. Among Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) voters, disapproval of the governor increased from 44% to 69%.
On a national scale, the federal government’s action in the fight against organized crime is judged insufficient by 77% of those interviewed, 53% say that the government “has not helped” and 24% that it “helps little”. Only 14% believe that effective collaboration exists. Among right-wing voters, this perception is even more intense: 80% of non-Bolsonarists and 65% of Bolsonarists said that the federal government did not contribute to the states.
Methodology
The Genial/Quaest survey was carried out between 30 and 31 October, through face-to-face interviews in homes. 1,500 people aged 16 and over from different regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro were interviewed. The margin of error is three percentage points, at a 95% confidence level.
