After weeks of silence, Ariane (Lola Marois) finally revealed to Javad (David Baio) that she was pregnant with him in Plus belle la vie, even Plus belle! A shock to the Mistral server, who was not expecting such news at all. If the two lovers have not yet made a choice about the future of the child, they are, in any case, reconciled.
A chance for AlloCiné editors to talk to David Bayot about the couple that Javad and Ariane make, their chemistry and the big decision they have to make together. Confidence!
AlloCiné: What do you think attracted Javadi Ariane?
David Bayot (Jawad): I think he has a bit of a fiery side. They play a bit of cat and mouse, but Javad quickly realizes his feelings for Ariane. And somehow he should try to protect it, fulfill it, feel good, feel comfortable. And there’s a bit about it where he’s a bit shy. He looked like a teenager when he threw it! He fell into depression and talked about it to everyone.
We already felt some chemistry between them during the closing bonus of Plus belle la vie on France 3. Did you realize that too?
We noticed this during France 3’s recent primetime broadcast. When I came back and had my first interaction with him, we told ourselves that it would be nice to play cat and dog. I think that is what inspired the authors. We threw barbs at each other, I was teasing, teasing.
He acted like he was hurt, but it actually made him laugh a lot. I think that’s how it started and we decided to develop it and maybe that’s what inspired the authors.
They started a fairly light story, which gradually transformed. Did you expect Javad to fall in love with Ariane?
Not so much. I’ll admit it was pretty funny to start with such a bad guy who has been dealing with the police for years and who ends up falling in love with one of them. A bit like Stockholm Syndrome!
He falls in love with his captors. So they both find themselves in this situation and say to themselves, “No, but it’s just not possible between us.” But in the end, anything is possible, eh, as in life.
Ariane becomes pregnant and keeps it a secret for weeks. How will he feel when he finally learns the truth?
He tries to understand why she didn’t tell him about it. He questions himself, what he did wrong, what he didn’t understand and why he didn’t trust him. He doesn’t even blame him.
He’s just trying to understand why he wasn’t comfortable enough to talk to her about it. And we’ll find out as the episodes unfold. He doesn’t blame her because he also knows her situation. He knows that he already has a daughter, that he does not necessarily want to settle down.
But I think on Ariane’s part, it’s probably a little bit of a lack of courage, a little bit of fear, in a way, of losing what he’s doing with Javad. But it’s more painful for him that he couldn’t confide in someone he likes and has a good time with.
I think he is trying to understand why and what happened in his head that he did not have enough confidence to discuss this and maybe discuss something together.
Does Javad not feel betrayed at all?
At least that’s not how I interpreted it. Elsewhere, he would probably feel betrayed, but not here. He has grown old like me, he has a certain maturity. In addition, for the first time there is a child’s story. He had never been in a situation like this.
I think he has learned from life and is trying to learn more and is probably ready to face such a dilemma today. Where if he was younger, he could have lost his temper. He would say to himself: “He betrays me, I don’t care, he doesn’t even talk to me, he does everything by himself.” But I think there is more maturity in the character.
We can see that it is deeply shaken during the ultrasound. What was it like filming that scene?
This has never happened to me, has it? (Laughs) I think as a person, when we find out that we’re going to be parents or that we have really good news or a surprise like that, I think the game is pretty easy because we know what it is. I think we all experience it in some way.
After that I had all the perfect conditions because Lola Marois and Marie Heneres were there. The stage is set and we just have to let ourselves go with this emotion, this discovery, this joy, perhaps even these doubts that may arise.
Jawad said to himself, “What are we doing here? It’s not for me to decide, it’s for him. Shall we reason together? Sure, maybe I want us to keep it!” I think it was fun to play and because it brought things out.
Obviously, I knew what was in store for my character for weeks and months. And that was probably the moment when I was able to say, “Ah, finally!”, because he is also coming out of depression.
The scene in which Javad asks Ariane to join him is also very touching. Is everything forgotten at that moment?
They start from scratch because, in fact, a new life begins for them. He fully reveals his feelings, so he is ready. He loves her, wants to spend his life with her and is ready to face it with her.
Do you have other projects at the moment?
I am currently in the process of adapting the book, The Secret of the Yellow Room. We are in incredible settings in Verdon. And I also met some great people. I’m doing a movie there with Benjamin Barochet, who I didn’t know, who is the character I relate to the most. I am very happy to work with him.
She’s great, she made me feel really welcome, she’s cute, she knew my business, and honestly, she made me feel comfortable. I am very happy. There’s also Michel Bernier, who I’m going to do some scenes with, who I’ve worked with before and who I adore, who I think is wonderful.
And Maddie Sadun, who we saw in What Have We Done to the Good Lord? and whom I knew before we were both actors. We had mutual friends and it was nice to meet again.
I’m also working on a series for Arte called Fertile directed by Cédric Le Gallo, with whom I created Les Crevettes pailletées. The screenplay was written by Anais Fabre, who currently plays Audrey in Plus belle la vie.
The series is just great. This is the story of a woman in her forties who has faded a little over the years. She has been trying ART with her lover for a long time and has an idea that it can increase her fertility by destroying her enemies. This is a series about a sociopath.
