One of the greatest classics of the Afternoon Session, “Enjoying the Crazy Life” (1986) will win a spin-off. Titled “Sam and Victor’s Day Off”, the project was developed by the creators of “Cobra Kai” – the trio Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald.
According to the website Deadline, the storyline will take place on the same day that Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) enjoyed the social life with his friends Cameron (Alan Ruck) and Sloane (Mia Sara) and will focus on what happened when two jacks decided to drive Cameron’s Ferrari in the original film.
The scene was a small part of the story, a joke that didn’t even name the characters, only now identified as Sam and Victor. In the film, they were played by extras Richard Edson and Larry Jenkins. The last one is already dead.
This indicates that the movie will resize the characters. But it’s unclear whether Broderick, Ruck, and Sara’s cameos were left out.
It is worth remembering that the idea of taking secondary characters from a famous work and turning them into the protagonists of a new story is nothing new. Playwright Tom Stoppard had great success with “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead”, a 1966 play about two “Hamlet” extras, which he also adapted into a 1990 film.
Screenwriter Bill Posley, who wrote 10 episodes of “Cobra Kai”, will be in charge of writing the “Enjoying the Crazy Life” spin-off, while Hurwitz, Schlossberg and Heald will oversee the project as executive producers.
With a simple premise, “Enjoying Life Crazy” marked an era by following Ferris Bueller, a young man who devises an elaborate plan to spend a day off from school with his girlfriend and best friend. The lie of his alleged illness escalates to the point that a charity campaign is organized for his life (Save Ferris), while he is persecuted by the school principal (Jeffrey Jones) willing to expose him.
The cast, however, featured none other than Jennifer Gray and Charlie Sheen.
The production became one of the biggest commercial hits of writer and director John Hughes’ career (1950-2009) and catapulted Matthew Broderick to stardom. The cultural impact was such that it even inspired the name of a ska band, Save Ferris, in the 90s.
Enjoy and remember the trailer.
