On the eve of the release of The Beast, in which Idris Elba and his family are hunted by a man-eating lion, here are five things you need to know about this rescue, directed by Balthasar Kormakur (“Everest”).
Balthasar Kormakur’s beast
With Idris Elba, Sharlto Copley, Ayanna Hali…
What is it about? Dr. Nate Daniels returns to South Africa, where he once met his late wife, to spend a long-planned vacation with his two daughters at a game reserve run by his old friend Martin Battles, a wildlife biologist. But this sparing vacation turns into a test of survival when a vengeful lion, the only survivor of a bloodthirsty hunt by evil poachers, begins devouring anyone in its path and pursues the doctor and his family.
He knows about survival!
Beast is the director Balthasar KormakurA director who knows a thing or two about survival movies. We owe him Everest, which tells the story of the 1996 disaster that killed eight climbers, as well as Survivre, which is based on an incredible true story: the story of an Icelandic sailor who managed to swim back to shore after a shipwreck in an iceberg. water…
Balthasar Kormakur has always been fascinated by wild animals and Africa. As a child, he collected pictures of lions that he cut out from magazines. He elaborates: “I wanted to find a film about survival, alone in the face of nature unleashed on man. A bit like Jaws or the documentary La MortSuspendue.”
Travel to South Africa

Beast was shot entirely in South Africa, in Cape Town (the capital) and especially in the Limpopo region (in the north of the country), in a natural environment. Balthasar Kormakur recalls:
“The jungles of South Africa were the perfect setting to capture the terror of this family trapped in a conflict beyond their control that threatens their lives. I was surprised how cold it is in South Africa. In the evening and at night, even though I’m from Iceland.”
“And it wasn’t easy to shoot at night because we had to light every scene in the African bush as much as possible. Not to mention that sometimes we had to shoot far from any big city and adapt to comfort and joy. of camping”.
Man-eating lions

If killer animal movies abound after Jaws (1975), there aren’t that many movies about human bloodthirsty lions. A clue to this path is undoubtedly Stephen Hopkins’ Shadow and Prey (1997), in which Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer face off against two man-eating big cats.
Idris Elba’s daughter fails!

Isan Elba, daughterIdris Elba, auditioned for one of Dr. Nate Daniels’ two daughters, but was unsuccessful. Reason ? Lack of chemistry with father. The actress even revealed that after this “failure” she did not speak to him for three weeks! 20-year-old Isan plans to become an actor. As of now, she has starred in the short horror film Crimson Ties, directed by Francesca Scorsese, who is none other than Martin Scorsese’s daughter.
Not real lions!

Idris Elba A real lion was never encountered on set: stock footage was used to illustrate certain scenes, and the rest of the time (and most of the time) the impressive cat was digitally designed. In order for the actors and the technical team to better imagine the physical presence of the animal, during the rehearsals it was “impersonated” by a stuntman dressed in gray (with participation in very precise choreography and a headdress the size of a predator’s head). Scenes were then shot without him to facilitate the insertion of the digital lion.
