Dragon House on OCS: Another Game of Thrones spin-off planned before Targaryen series

HBO restarts the machine Game of Thrones The first with a spin-off called House of the Dragon that began airing on August 22nd on OCS in France. The American cable channel is going to use the world created George RR Martin on television and many spin-off series are in development.

For now, it’s Dragon House, based on the book Fire and Blood, that all eyes are on. Will this prequel set 200 years before Game of Thrones win over fans? The series follows the events leading up to the Civil War, known as the Dance of Dragons, which will lead to the loss of the dragons and the beginning of the fall of House Targaryen.

But you should know that Dragon House wasn’t supposed to be the first Game of Thrones spin-off to see the light of day. Another spin-off series was developed: Bloodmoon. Announced in 2018, this spin-off was also a prequel, but set almost 8,000 years before the intrigues of Game of Thrones!

Rumor has it that Bloodmoon is set to revisit the early legends and heroes of Westeros…and maybe even create the White Walkers!

With screenwriter Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, X-Men, Kingsman) and George RR Martin at the helm, the project was allowed to shoot a pilot on a budget of $30 million. The cast included Naomi Watts and Jamie Campbell Bower.

However, HBO backed out the following year and dropped the spin-off. Robert Greenblatt, ex-Warner, preferred Dragon House. And he explained why the Bloodmon pilot didn’t convince him in an interview HollywoodReporter :

“It wasn’t unwatchable or scary or anything. It was well made and it turned out amazing. But it didn’t blow me away like the original series. It didn’t have the depth and richness of the original. The series pilot.”

Same story for Casey Bloys, HBO’s content manager: “Bloodmoon needed a lot more invention. It was a bigger risk for bigger rewards. It wasn’t terribly bad. But the development process and the pilot episodes are hard to do.”

Of course, it was difficult for Jane Goldman and her teams to create the world of her series because it could not be based on any specific book by George RR Martin, unlike House of the Dragon, which is based on “Fire and Blood”. The task was too great for the development of Bloodmoon.

But let Game of Thrones fans rest assured, a spin-off series is in the works, including a Jon Snow sequel with his translator Kit Harington.
