fantastic race he is preparing to return for season 34 in September, but when he does, it will be with a key rule change. Do you know how each season there are some teams saved from a surprise stage without elimination? Well, here we are. At least for this season, each stage will now feature an elimination.

The announcement slipped into the press release promoting the return of the beloved reality show, which will feature reality stars. There will be 12 teams competing around the world, this time starting in Munich, but after each stage is completed, a duo receives the ugly big ax. This will be the first time in the history of the series that there hasn’t been at least one non-elimination phase and will likely increase and decrease the tension. Let’s talk about why.

For one thing, this change will definitely increase the pressure and tension on each leg. There’s always this thought in the back of every team’s mind that maybe, just maybe if they’re last, there’s a chance they’ll be saved with a non-elimination phase. I don’t have the exact figures, but it seems to happen about three times a season. Competitors sometimes even directly say they host Phil Keoghan something like, “Please tell me this isn’t an elimination.” I’m not saying teams don’t always compete, but we will probably see some teams put in a little bit more effort because they know they have no chance of being lucky.

That said, removing non-removable legs will also significantly remove tension from at least some legs. Each season there are absolutely incredible stages. Maybe a team gets lost trying to lead somewhere. Maybe a team misses a flight. Maybe a team can’t handle a barricade, no matter how long they’re there. There are always some times in the season when one team is hours behind the others. The lingering possibility of a non-elimination phase has always held back some dramas and will now be removed.

My feelings are mixed on this, but I am approaching the new season in a positive light because the change, on the whole, is positive. The reality competition is no longer the same as the first season as it is constantly evolving. They didn’t enforce a fairer division of roadblocks until Season 6. U-turns weren’t introduced until Season 12. They just told teams to slow down to help each other last year. All of these changes were good for the show. Each run, of course, hasn’t been great, but a few new runs (as well as competitors) always help the show deliver new and great things. So, let’s cross our fingers and hope for the best.

fantastic race will return on September 21 at 10pm ET / 10pm PT, which is a Wednesday night. It’s unclear if any of the other pandemic-related changes will return, but it will air on CBS and will also be available on Paramount + for those who prefer a streaming option. The venues have announced the candidates, who everything has been revealedwill visit Germany, Austria, Spain, France, Iceland and Jordan, as well as Nashville in the United States.
