In the early 2000s, director Peter Jackson managed to transpose the trilogy Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien but deemed inappropriate. Seventeen Oscars and several billion dollars at the international box office later, the New Zealand filmmaker did it again in 2012 with a new trilogy, this time inspired by The Hobbit.
In fact, it seemed logical that the latter would be involved in the development of the series of rings of power, designed as a prequel to The Lord of the Rings, since it takes place several millennia before the destruction of the one ring during the ring’s creation. The Rings of Power and The Rise of the Necromancer Sauron.
Although his possible involvement as a creative consultant on the series was mentioned, Peter Jackson was ultimately not involved in the production of the program. A decision that isn’t his, as he explained in an interview with the podcast The Hollywood Reporter Awards Talks :
They asked me if I wanted to participate – . I replied that I couldn’t answer that question without reading the script. They replied: “As soon as we have the first scripts, we will send them to you.” And the scripts never came. I heard that last, but it’s okay. I’m not complaining at all.
In an official press release, the management of Prime Video, in turn, explained that the dark issue of rights with the studio Warner Bros. (The platform only acquired the rights to adapt certain Tolkien books, not all of his works) forced the series to be separated from the films. Because of this, several characters – such as the elves Galadriel and Elrond – had to change translators.
Therefore, the first season of The Rings of Power was filmed without the participation of Peter Jackson. Keep in mind, though, that the series still featured some of the Lord of the Rings trilogy’s talent, such as composer Howard Shore (title music only) and illustrator John Howe.
The first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video starting September 2.
