
The anime “Paprika” will become a live-action series with the production and direction of Cathy Yan, the director of “Birds of Prey”.
Released in 2006, the animated film was visionary director Satoshi Kon’s fourth and final work (“The Godfathers of Tokyo”) prior to his untimely death from cancer in 2010 at the age of 46, and attracted l attention to its beauty and richness of detail, winning six international awards.
Although the drawings are inevitably the main memory of “Paprika”, the original plot was published in a 1993 novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui (also author of “The Girl Who Conquered Time”).
The story revolves around a futuristic device used by therapists to enter their clients’ dreams in order to cure their psychological ailments. But the technology is stolen by an unknown criminal, who uses the device to control minds. A therapist and her team race against time to identify the thief and prevent a tragedy.
Production is in development for Prime Video, Amazon’s streaming platform, and there is no preview date yet.
