The Academia Brasileira de Cinema innovated this year in defining the candidate who will represent Brazil in the search for a place in the Best International Film category at the Oscars.
The committee responsible for the selection announced this Tuesday (30/8) a list of six preselected candidates, after an initial evaluation of the films presented. One of them will be the Brazilian representative at the Oscars.
The chosen ones were “A Mãe”, by Cristiano Burlan, “A Viagem de Pedro”, by Laís Bodansky, “Carvão”, by Carolina Markowicz, “Marte Um”, by Gabriel Martins, “Pacificado”, by Paxton Winters, and ” Paloma “, by Marcelo Gomes.
Only two of these feature films were released commercially: “Mars One” and “Pacificado”, directed by an American. “Pedro’s Journey” will debut on Thursday (1/9). But the rest is yet to be announced. “Carvão” and “Paloma”, included, will be premiered at the Rio Festival.

“A Mãe” sold the Jury Prize at the Gramado Festival, held earlier this month, while “Marte Um” won the Popular Jury Prize at the Rio Grande do Sul festival. Screened at the Sundance Film Festival in the US, “Mars One” also delighted US critics, earning a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“A Viagem de Pedro”, in which Cauã Reymond plays Dom Pedro I, last year won the award for best direction for Laís Bodanzky at the Rio Festival.
“Charcoal” was selected for screening at the Toronto Film Festival, an important showcase for the Oscars. “Paloma” is in the international selection of the Munich Film Festival.
And “Pacificado” is an American co-production, which stars director Darren Aronofsky as a producer and won the Conchiglia d’Oro at the San Sebastián Film Festival.
