The start of the school year is going to be a busy one on Netflix, with five upcoming movies and series not to be missed. Discover the program… and there is something for everyone, for sure!
Athena (September 23)
What is it about? Recalled from the front after the death of his younger brother, who died as a result of alleged police intervention, Abdel sees his family torn apart. Between his younger brother Karim’s desire for revenge and his older brother, dealer Moktar’s threatened business, he tries to calm the tension. Minutes later, the city of Athena is transformed into a fortified fortress, the scene of a family and collective tragedy. Just when everyone thinks they’ve found the truth, the city descends into chaos…
What is there to find out? Most likely the perfect moment of cinema that Netflix will offer on September 23 with Athena, diving into a city set on fire and spilled after the death of a young boy. Directed by Romain Gavras (The World Is Yours), the film is reminiscent of a Greek tragedy with its power-lifting and quite remarkable soundtrack. The trailer did not hesitate to stir up debate and create a bit of a stir. It remains to be seen whether that will be the final outcome.
Blonde (September 28)
What is it about? A bold reinterpretation of the trajectory of one of Hollywood’s most timeless icons, Marilyn Monroe. From his tumultuous childhood to his meteoric rise to complicated love stories—from Norma Jeane to Marilyn—this film blurs the lines between fact and fiction to explore the ever-widening gap between his public persona and the person he was. It was intimate.
What is there to find out? As the synopsis suggests, Blonde is not a biopic strictly speaking about Marilyn Monroe, but it captures key moments in her life. It’s an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’s bestseller, which delighted in debunking the myth surrounding this character, who continues to fascinate even after her death. It was Ana de Armas who had the daunting task of fitting Monroe’s exquisite white dress. The trailer, as well as several stills released by Netflix, attest to the disturbing similarities between the two women.
Midnight Club (October 7)
What is it about? At a hospital for adults with serious illnesses, patients meet every night at midnight to share scary stories.
What is there to find out? Whenever Mike Flanagan suggests a new series, we’re always there. Especially after the excellent The Haunting of and the no less intriguing Midnight Mass. In this case, the king of horrors adapts Christopher Pike’s novel for young people and offers a new camera, a theater of paranormal and … scary events.
The School of Good and Evil (October 21)
What is it about? In this modern-day tale, best friends Sophie and Agatha find themselves on opposite sides when they are forced into an enchanted school that trains heroes and villains to maintain the balance between good and evil.
What is there to find out? It is a good actor that Netflix offers School of Good and Evil, a fantasy and family film adapted from the literary saga of the same name. The two heroes answer to Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, Michelle Yeoh, Laurence Fishburne or even Ben Kingsley… The whole thing is directed by the very stylish Paul Feig, to whom we owe especially My Best Friends and Shadow. of Emily. If successful, this feature film could be the start of a profitable franchise for the platform as there are 7 volumes.
Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities (from October 25)
What is it about? A horror anthology created by Guillermo del Toro, each episode of which will be signed by a different director.
What is there to find out? Netflix gave the Mexican filmmaker a hand in this rather attractive project. The latter personally chose the directors and the stories adapted for the screen. We will find Lovecraft, but also unpublished stories imagined by del Toro. After the series launches on October 25, two new episodes will air daily until October 28, when all eight episodes will be available. To find out the full programme, it is here.
