A look at “Titanic”, James Cameron’s real monument, which was released in 1997, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s mythical replica, which the director improvised during filming.
We are at the beginning of Titanic. Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) has just boarded – just – a giant liner and is investigating the sinking alongside his friend Fabrizio. Galvanized by the ocean spray that poured over his face, leaning against the ship’s bow, he stretched out his arms and into the horizon uttered a line that will be remembered:
“I am the master of the universe!” (in OV, “I am the king of the world!”)
Contrary to what one might imagine, this little sentence, which could easily be considered the most famous feature film, was not in the original script. Indeed, as he revealed on the microphone of the show The movies that made me On the BBC in 2019, James Cameron completely improvised on set:
“invented on the spot”she said. “I was sitting in a basket, on a crane, losing light. We tried a few things, a few copies, and nothing seemed to work.”
It was at this point that Cameron decided to make a last ditch effort and offered his comedian a very simple and powerful proposition:
“I played everything and said it : ‘I have a line for you. Just say ‘I’m King of the Universe’ with open arms, just be in the moment, celebrate the moment.’ And on the walkie-talkie he said, “What??”
Despite his misgivings, DiCaprio eventually followed James Cameron’s directive and turned that little phrase into an unforgettable film.
