Actor Ewan McGregor (“Obi-Wan Kenobi”) confessed that he considered drug use while preparing to play Mark Renton in the film “Trainspotting – No Limits” (1996), in order to better understand the character, dealing with heroin addiction issues, to “know how” it feels.
In an interview with the “Smart-Less” podcast, he said he found it difficult to play such a complex character without understanding him. Therefore, he seriously considered the possibility of taking drugs.
“I was like, ‘How can you play a heroin addict if you’ve never used him?’ As a young man, I thought, ‘Fuck it, go out and do it,’ “he said.
He eventually gave up on the idea after talking to people suffering from addictions. McGregor said that, in preparation for the film, he decided to meet drug addicts in Glasgow, Scotland. After that encounter with drug addicts, “it became really clear that this was a disrespectful idea to drug addicts,” he said.
Directed by Danny Boyle, “Trainspotting” has become a modern classic of British cinema. The plot follows Renton, who struggles with addiction and lives surrounded by even more problematic friends, all trying to overcome their chemical addiction, their relationship problems and unemployment.
The cast also included actors Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle, Ewen Bremmer, Kevin McKidd and Kelly Macdonald. Remember the trailer below.
