One of the scariest horror movies ever comes out in cinemas and it freezes your blood

Horror movie lovers will be delighted! On April 13, Ring comes out on the big screen with a restored 4K version. And this J-Horror masterpiece is not the only one that enjoys a family facelift!

Following the release of the cult trilogy Infernal Affairs on the big screen last March, distributor The Jokers is repeating the operation with three featured works from Japanese horror movies.

Ring and Dark Water, directed by Hideo Nakata in 1998 and 2002, benefited from 4K restoration for this occasion. The third film, Audition, directed by Takashi Miike in 1990, meanwhile received a 2K facelift.

The Ring is one of the most important feature films of the J-Horror Wave, considered to be the first to popularize the genre. After its release in Japan, the film grossed more than 1 billion yen and became the highest-grossing horror film in the country of the rising sun.

The story takes us to Tokyo, the capital of Japan. Rumors are circulating among adults: watching a mysterious video will lead to some death after a week.

After the unexplained death of his nephew, journalist Reiko Asakava decides to investigate, but finds himself under a curse.

For the remaining seven days of his life, he will have to go back to the source of the fateful video and meet the ghost that bothers the televisions: Sadako.

The latter has become a legendary creature of fantastic cinema, her long black hair still haunting everyone who has seen this movie. The scene when he came out of the TV to chase the protagonist chilled the blood of millions of viewers.

Popular J-HORROR RING

The ring has had a huge impact on horror movies around the world, inspiring especially in the US and Spain.

“When I shot Ring 1, I did not think horror movies would become such a social phenomenon in the world of Japanese cinema. I assumed that Ring 1 and 2 would be aimed at students and young couples in twenty years.”Explains director Hideo Nakata.

“In fact, the Ring has reached high school students, and Ring 2 has been successful with young, high school students and even elementary school students.”he says.

Note that the ring is taken from Koji Suzuki’s novel, a sort of Japanese Stephen King. It was released in 1991. Kadokawa, the production company behind the adaptation of Nakata, wanted to turn it into an unpretentious horror B-series.

The film was intended for distribution in Oboe, during Halloween or All Saints’ Day, or the Japanese equivalent of Halloween. Already successfully screened for Japanese television in 1995, the ring had Kadokawa’s cinematic potential.

The studio had a penchant for the phenomenon that became a feature film, rising to the level of real hints in terms of terror in cinema.

Hideo Nakata will shoot the sequel, Ring 2, in 1999. In addition, the work will have the right to an American remake in 2002 by Gore Verbinski starring Naomi Watts.

The Japanese filmmaker himself will shoot the sequel after three years. In 2017, a new version was also released: Le Cercle – Rings, but it did not really impress.

Note that the success of the ring allowed Western viewers to discover the figure of “yÅ«rei” for the first time. In Japanese folklore, Yurei is a ghost who is forced to stay on earth because of a traumatic emotional experience.

These spectra are manifested in a particular type. The most famous in Japanese horror movies is Onrio, motivated by revenge.

Generally, Yuras wear white clothing, which is the color of mourning in Japan. Film director Kyoshi Kurosawa often used this figure in his films (Kaïro, Vers l’autre rive, Le Secret de la chambre noire).

In troubled waters

After Ring 2 in Japan, Hideo Nakata made another film that would become a classic, Dark Water (2002).

The story tells the story of a Yoshim character who is experiencing a divorce. Together with his six-year-old daughter Ikuko, he moves into a dilapidated building on the outskirts of Tokyo. When they try to get used to a new life, mysterious events take place.

Who is this little girl in a yellow robe walking down the corridors? Why does Ikuko hold a small red baby bag in his hand?

What is this runoff that spreads to the walls and ceiling of their apartment? Threats outside the borders will try to separate the mother from the daughter.

This feature film is based on a collection of short stories by Koji Suzuki, already the author of the novel Stamp. Dark Water is an adaptation of the story Floating water. American remake will be directed by Walter Sales in 2005 starring Jennifer Connelly.

Casting that goes wrong

The third feature film related to these horrific releases is Audition, directed by Takashi Miike.

The filmmaker introduces us to film producer Shigearu Aoyama. A seven-year-old widow, on the advice of a colleague Yoshikawa, organizes an audition for a fictional movie to find a new wife.

He finds a rare pearl in the person of Assam Yamasaki, a sweet and clever young woman. He immediately falls in love with her and, without revealing his stubbornness, begins a relationship with her.

Assam disappears as he escapes into the ocean. Aoyama’s investigation has revealed a gruesome secret: the disappearance and murder of several people. When he begins to understand Assam’s true personality, he reappears and everything becomes a nightmare.
