“Mars Um” will represent Brazil at the Oscars; to know more

The film “Mars One” was chosen to represent Brazil in the Best International Film category at the 2023 Oscars.

The information was revealed by professor and film critic Waldemar Dalenogare on his Twitter account. The choice was made in an online meeting of the Brazilian Academy of Film and Audiovisual Arts on the morning of this Monday (5), and “Mars Um” was chosen from a list that contained five other preselected films.

Dalenogare also pointed out that this was the first time that Brazil has used a new commission model for the selection of the country’s representative film at the Oscars, with a pre-list and an advance presentation of the selected film.

Other finalists included Cristiano Burlan’s “A Mãe”, Laís Bodanzky’s “A Viagem de Pedro”, Carolina Markowicz’s “Carvão”, Marcelo Gomes’s “Paloma”, and Paxton Winters’ “Pacificado”.

“Mars Um” is directed and written by Gabriel Martins. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of this year and follows a family of Minas Gerais, made up of a cast mostly unknown to the general public.

After the presentation of each country’s chosen films, which runs until November 15, the Academy of Oscars will announce a preliminary list of finalists on December 21. After that, the announcement of the nominees takes place on January 24, 2023, and if “Mars One” gets an Oscar nomination, it will compete for the award on March 12.

The Best International Film category was previously named Best Foreign Film and has changed its name from the 2020 Oscars. Brazil has not had a finalist in the category since 1999, with “Central do Brasil”.

Synopsis of “Mars Um”: “A black family from the outskirts of Contagem, Minas Gerais, tries to follow their dreams in a country that has just elected a far-right man who represents the opposite of everything they are as president.” .
