On this September 7, which marks the 200th anniversary of the proclamation of Independence, we have prepared a list of 10 options for films, series and soap operas that deal, directly or indirectly, with the theme of Brazilian independence, with several titles on the historical period in its different approaches over time. There are works available for free on YouTube, others on subscription platforms, a film in theaters and a series that will debut this date on open TV.

Historical characters such as Dom Pedro I are highlighted in these works, which also find space for other important personalities of independence, such as Maria Leopoldina, Tiradentes and even the Marchesa de Santos, Dom Pedro’s lover. Take a look below.

| INDEPENDENCE OR DEATH | YOUTUBE

Brazilian film released in 1972 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the declaration of independence, “Independência ou Morte” is the white table version of History, with the right to recreate the painting of the same name by Pedro Américo, as well as showing other events centered on the figure of the Marquise of Santos (Glória Menezes, from “A Favorita”), lover of Dom Pedro I (Tarcísio Meira, from “A Lei do Amor”). That’s why the ending, with Dom Pedro’s exile, only makes sense when you see “A Viagem de Pedro”.

The cast also consists of Dionísio Azevedo (“Eternidade”) in the role of José Bonifácio, Kate Hansen (“The Bearer”) in the role of Empress Leopoldina, Manuel de Nóbrega (creator of the program “A Praça da Alegria”) in the role of King João VI and Heloísa Helena (“Roque Santeiro”) in the role of Carlota Joaquina. Cauã Reymond (“German”) plays Dom Pedro I in this historical drama directed by Laís Bodanzky (“Como Nosso Pais”) that accompanies the Brazilian emperor on his journey of exile after being expelled from the country he founded. Dethroned, depressed and ill, he tries to find the strength during the Atlantic crossing to face his brother, who usurped the throne in Portugal, remembering his time in Brazil, from his arrival in the colony to the proclamation of independence.

The cast also highlights the German Luise Heyer (from the “Dark” series) in the role of Empress Leopoldina, the plastic artist Rita Wainer, who debuts as an actress in the role of Domitila de Castro, the Marquise de Santos, the Irish Francis Magee (“Into the Badlands”), the Welket Bungué of Guinea (“Berlin Alexanderplatz”) and several Portuguese actors, notably Luísa Cruz (“The Thousand and One Nights”), João Lagarto (“O Filme do Bruno Aleixo” ) and Victória Guerra (“Variations”).

Created by Carlos Lombardi (author of the telenovela “Kubanacan”) and under the general direction of Wolf Maya (“Amor à Vida”), the series “O Quinto dos Infernos” (2002) mixes comedy and eroticism telling the story of the coming of the family real for Brazil. With a narrative spanning several decades, the series first focused on the figure of King Dom João (played by André Mattos, from “Narcos”) and then was made by Dom Pedro I (Marcos Pasquim, from “Juntos e Enrolados” ).

Created by Alexandre Machado (“Shippados”) and Bruno Mazzeo (“E Aí … Comeu?”), This comic series begins in 1822 and explores the promise of change fueled by Brazil’s proclaimed independence. However, the series shows that many of the problems common to contemporary society have already existed since the country began.

The cast consists of Fernanda Torres (“Os Normais”), Alexandre Nero (“Empire”), Matheus Nachtergaele (“Big Jato”), Johnny Massaro (“Verdades Secretas”) and Karine Teles (“Bacurau”). “Filhos da Pátria” had two seasons, available on Globoplay.

| NEW WORLD | GLOBOPLAY

Aired in 2017, “Novo Mundo” is a soap opera conceived by Thereza Falcão and Alessandro Marson (both of “A Regra do Jogo”) that has as its background the period preceding the declaration of independence.

The plot begins in 1817 and follows Anna Millman (Isabelle Drummond, from “Turma da Mônica: Lições”), an Englishwoman who works as a Portuguese teacher and becomes involved with a Portuguese actor, Joaquim Martinho (Chay Suede, from “Minha Fama de Mau “), during a trip to Brazil.

The reason for this trip is the marriage of the emperor Dom Pedro (Caio Castro, from “A Dona do Pedaço”) with the Austrian princess Maria Leopoldina (Letícia Colin, from “Entre Irmãs”).

The cast also includes Ingrid Guimarães, Caco Ciocler (“Simonal”), Júlia Lemmertz (“Pequeno Segredo”), Felipe Camargo (“Beyond Time”) and Babu Santana (“Tim Maia”).

| MARQUESA DE SANTOS | YOUTUBE

Dom Pedro I’s Lover is also the subject of the miniseries “Marquesa de Santos”, produced and broadcast on the extinct TV Manchete in 1984. Created by Wilson Aguiar Filho (“Os Imigrantes”), the miniseries tells the story of independence from the point of view of Domitila de Castro Canto e Melo, who would later win the title of Marchesa de Santos.

“Marquesa de Santos” was played by Maitê Proença (“Me Chama de Bruna”), Gracindo Júnior (“Magnífica 70”), Edwin Luisi (“Na Corda Bamba”) Maria Padilha (“The rule of the game”), Leonardo Villar (“Chega de Saudade”) and Beth Goulart (“Victoria”). The management was responsible for Ary Coslov (“The war of the sexes”).

| THE CHRISTMAS OF THE EMPEROR BOY | YOUTUBE

Christmas special produced by Rede Globo in 2008, “O Natal do Menino Emperor” shows Dom Pedro II (Sérgio Britto, from “O Maior Amor do Mundo”) at the age of 65, telling his nephew Antônio (Rafael Miguel, from “Cama de Gato “)” “) some of the most memorable passages of his life. Among the stories told by Dom Pedro II, his relationship with his father, Dom Pedro I (Reynaldo Gianecchini, from “Bom Dia, Verônica”) stands out.

Main title of the Brazilian film shoot, “Carlota Joaquina, Princesa do Brazil” (1995) is another work that tells the story of the Portuguese royal family’s arrival in Brazil, this time by Carlota Joaquina de Bourbon (played by Marieta Severo , from “A Grande Família”), wife of King João VI (Marco Nanini, also from “A Grande Família”).

Directed by Carla Camurati (“Irma Vap – O Retorno”), the film explored the historical theme through a comic approach, which pleased the audience and turned the film into a great national success. The cast also includes Maria Fernanda (“Olho por Olho”) as Queen Maria I, Marcos Palmeira (“Pantanal”) as Dom Pedro I and Beth Goulart (“Vitória”) as Princess Maria Theresa of Bragança.

A Brazilian and Italian co-production released in 1972, “Os Inconfidentes” is the best film on the history of the separatist movement known as Inconfidência Mineira, a prelude to independence, repressed by the Portuguese Crown in 1789 and culminating in the execution of the movement’s leader, Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, better known as Tiradentes (who in the film is played by the late José Wilker, from “O Maior Amor do Mundo”).

The cast also includes Luís Linhares (“O Homem do Pau-Brasil”), Paulo César Peréio (“Magnífica 70”), Fernando Torres (“SOZ: Soldados o Zombies”) and Carlos Kroeber (“Barriga de Aluguel”). Directed by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade (“Macunaíma”), “Os Inconfidentes” appears in the list of the 100 best Brazilian films of all time, made by the Brazilian Association of Film Critics (Abraccine).

| INDEPENDENCIES | TELEVISION CULTURE

Created by Luiz Fernando Carvalho in collaboration with Luís Alberto de Abreu (both of “Capitu” and “Hoje É Dia de Maria”), “Independências” is a series structured around the concept of “New Historiography”. It is a historical reinterpretation from an alternative approach, with characters who do not normally appear in “conventional” history, but who have been important in the unfolding of historical events. The series highlights, for example, the importance of women in the independence process, highlighting, among other things, the participation of Maria Leopoldina, wife of Dom Pedro I – who in fact signed the recommendation for the independence of Brazil.

The great cast consists of Antonio Fagundes (“Deus É Brasileiro”), Daniel de Oliveira (“Aruanas”), Isabél Zuaa (“As Boas Maneiras”), Ilana Kaplan (“A Vila”), Gabriel Leone (“Dom” ), Maria Fernanda Candido (“Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets”), Marat Descartes (“Working Tires”) and the singers Fafá de Belém and Margareth Menezes.
