New Amsterdam fans were in for a surprise last July… indeed, before the medical series is about to begin its fifth and final season, Freema Agyeman announced that she will not be participating in this final go-round. A decision carefully considered by the actor, who then left a tender message to the community of the show.
In her text, the actress, who played Dr. Helen Sharp, thanked the teams and followers of American fiction: “My dear New Amsterdam family. First of all, I want to thank you for your endless, unwavering and deliciously fierce support. (…) What an adventure! Thank you for living with me.”
Weeks after this completely unexpected revelation, Ryan Eggold spoke to TV Line about the sudden release of the man who played his precious and tender on-screen sidekick. He explains that he found out the news shortly before the end of season 4.
“ Many things, many things mingled together, but above all a great love for Freema, Dr. Max Goodwin’s interpreter recalls. I wanted her to always do what was best for her.”
Ryan Eggold then goes on to say:It’s a shame I didn’t get to do more scenes with him because it was always fun and motivating. The romantic ark we shared all those seasons was very dynamic, evolving, and fluid.“
Despite this significant loss for New Amsterdam, the star of the show is enthusiastic about the continuation and conclusion of her character’s adventures.
