With the Little Mermaid teaser, the event revealed new titles to be released.
The D23 Expo warmed the hearts of the fans. Sean Bailey, president of film production at Walt Disney Studios (Disney Live Action); Pete Docter, creative director of Pixar Animation Studios; and Jennifer Lee, creative director of Walt Disney Animation Studios gathered in the main auditorium to reveal some of the most anticipated releases of the next few years.
To begin with, fans received a greeting from ABRACADABRA 2 stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy who magically appeared in a video to surprise the salon with a new trailer. It’s been 29 years since the 17th century sisters were resurrected and they are looking for revenge. To prevent starving witches from causing a new kind of chaos before dawn on All Saints’ Eve, three high school students (Whitney Peak, Belissa Escobedo, Lilia Buckingham) must take action. Directed by Anne Fletcher and produced by Lynn Harris, Abracadabra 2 also stars Sam Richardson, Tony Hale and Hannah Waddingham. The film will debut exclusively on Disney + on September 30th.
Later, Bailey welcomed DISENGAGED stars to the stage, including Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, Maya Rudolph, Gabriella Baldacchino, James Marsden, Idina Menzel, Yvette Nicole Brown and Jayma Mays. With songs by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, the musical comedy picks up 15 years after the marriage of Giselle (Adams) and Robert (Dempsey), as the family moves to the suburbs in search of a “happily ever after”.
PETER PAN & WENDY highlights iconic characters in a whole new way. Joining Bailey on stage were cast members Alexander Molony (Peter Pan), Ever Anderson (Wendy), Alyssa WapanĂątahk (Little Tiger) and Captain Hook himself: Jude Law. The new film delves into Wendy’s story as she joins the boy who refuses to grow up on a magical journey to Neverland and reveals the story behind the rivalry between Peter Pan and one of Disney’s most memorable villains. The cast talked about what fans can expect and gave D23 audiences an exclusive first look at the film. Directed by David Lowery and produced by Jim Whitaker, the live-action retelling of the 1953 classic will be available on Disney + in 2023.
Bailey wrapped up his presentation with four highly anticipated titles hitting theaters in 2023 and 2024:
the director of HAUNTED HOUSE Justin Simien, who worked at Disneyland, joined Bailey to talk about the spooky adventure. Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, Haunted Mansion is about a woman and her son who bring together a diverse team of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural invaders. They shared an exclusive preview of the film with the public at D23 Expo, and then welcomed the queen of horror films, Jamie Lee Curtis, who made an unforgettable entry into a Haunted Mansion buggy. In the film, which debuts next year, Curtis plays Madame Leota.
MUFASA: THE LION KING, the Lion King prequel won’t be released until 2024, but director Barry Jenkins was there to show an unreleased preview and share some of the film, which is currently in production. Told in flashbacks, Rafiki, Timon and Pumbaa tell the story of Mufasa to a young lion cub. Mufasa reveals the rise of one of the greatest kings of the Kingdom Lands
SNOW WHITE is a live retelling of the classic story with Rachel Zegler in the lead role and Gal Gadot as Snow White the Queen’s stepmother. The two stars of the film joined Bailey to talk about their roles and share a first look at the iconic characters from the 2024 film, directed by Marc Webb and produced by Marc Platt.
the director of THE LITTLE MERMAID, Rob Marshall, took a break from post-production from the seas to share more on the live-action version of the beloved short story. He played the “Part of Your World” sequence for fans in Hall D23 and invited Ariel herself to the stage, Halle Bailey, who shared her excitement about her new role. Marshall concluded by presenting the new teaser around the world.
