The Rings of Power: 3 Questions You May Have After Episode 3 on Prime Video

In Episode 3, The Rings of Power finally revealed the prestigious city of Numenor in a series of breathtaking images!

While the episode has generated a lot of discussion, especially due to a certain sequence with Galadriel on a horse, most viewers agree that there is a visual slap.

From the very first moments we find Galadriel and Halbrand, his companion in trouble, gathered on the ship of a certain Captain Elendil. The latter takes them to his island, the fairy-tale city of Númenor.

Here’s a little demystification with 3 questions you might ask yourself after watching Episode 3.

Login to NÚMENOR

The boat of Elendil enters the magnificent city of Numenor, passing under a bridge of extraordinary architecture. Highlighted by Bear McCreary’s sublime score, this sequence gives us chills. This echoes back to Episode 2 when Elrond enters Khazad-Dum, the dwarven abode.

Magnificent Nimenor

The scene continues to show the legendary city of Numenor in all its glory. A giant statue in the background catches our attention. Who does it represent? It would most likely be Arendyl, a mythical character imagined by Tolkien.

This can be seen in his novel The Silmarillion and The Book of Lost Tales. It is also mentioned in Lord of the Rings as legendary. Airendil is a half-elf, the only son of Tuor, a man of the House of Hador, and Idril Celebrindal, a Noldorin elf. He marries Elving, with whom he has two sons, Elrond and Elros.

EÄRENDIL reaches out to us

With an open palm, Eärendil welcomes travelers to the island of Númenor.

Ulmo Lord of the Seas

An Egyptian and Greco-Roman inspired city, Numenor is full of giant statues and grand monuments. On this plan, we can distinguish the huge sculpture from which the waterfall rises. This would be Ulmo, Lord of the Waters, lord of all oceans, lakes and rivers.

In The Silmarillion, Ulmo is described as follows: “He is alone. He stays nowhere long, but wanders at will in the deep seas that surround the earth or lie beneath it. His power comes first after Manwe, and he was his closest. Friend before Valinor existed.”

What is that whisper in the distance?

Episode 3 also introduces a young Isildur, son of Elendil. When we meet him on the ship, a woman’s voice is heard in the distance, like a divine whisper. Who can call Aragorn’s ancestor?

Lady of the Seas

The answer comes later in the episode when Galadriel follows Wynen’s statue. Of course, Isildur hears his whispers, for the latter is in the service of Maia Ulmo. Also called the lady of the sea, she rules all sea creatures as well as aquatic plants. He is especially revered by the great Númenorean sailors.

What is this disgusting creature?

This foul creature (which looks like the Lion King’s hyenas) appears in episode 3 and attacks Arondir and his team of elves, who have been kidnapped by orcs. This is suitable. Tolkien described these ghastly fissures of unspeakable ugliness as huge fierce wolves, muscular, swift and agile. They have already appeared in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and the first Hobbit.
