Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: Colin Firth plays a king with a speech impediment.
In 2007, director Tom Hooper heard about the play from his mother the king’s speech A chronicle of King George VI’s (father of Queen Elizabeth II’s) filth problems. After that, he decided to adapt this unknown story for the big screen, entrusting the writing of the screenplay to David Seidler, who himself was affected by this disability. The result is a thrilling film that combines intimate and real facts, emotion and humor.
The plot is carried by the excellent performance of Colin Firth, who slips into the skin of a dirty character for the third time in his career (so it was in the play. Three days of rain and the film One Month in the Country).
By his own admission, the actor this time focused on the heroic dimension of the monarch, who had to overcome language difficulties in September 1939 to overcome the radio address of the United Kingdom’s entry into the war against Germany.
Winner of 4 Oscars and 7 BAFTAs (including Best Picture), The King’s Speech is the highest rated work on AlloCiné – 4.3 out of 5 – among Tom Hooper’s filmography.
