The film re-signifies the director’s past from the memorabilia found in his grandfather’s house in Dom Pedrito
STATE SPECIAL – It’s a great movie, and if it weren’t for mars one – who won the Brazilian nomination to seek a place in the Oscar – would, perhaps, be the best Brazilian film of the year. 5 houses it is a document on the margins, narrated in an imaginary structure. It remains on display, at one time, at the Espaço Itaú Augusta, in São Paulo.
The five houses are located in Dom Pedrito, on the border with Rio Grande do Sul. Less than two hours by car and the traveler arrives in Livramento, separated from Rivera, Uruguay, by a single street and square. In the presentation of the film at the Gaúcha exhibition of the recent Feast of the Gramatothe director Bruno Gularte Barreto summed up the story.
Storytelling
He was from Pedrite, he left the city after the death of his parents. Upon departure, Bruno and his brothers left all the relics kept in a shed on his grandfather’s farm. Twenty years later, the wind ripped off part of the roof. Bruno is back. He didn’t just find the boxes. He found the city, the people he left behind, the boy he left behind. In 5 houses it re-signifies its own memories, its past. “I left thinking it was forever. Coming back showed me that people weren’t what I thought in my imagination. And by telling their story, they told mine.”
The film was born as part of a larger project, which also includes a photographic book and an exhibition at the Rio Grande do Sul Museum of Art. The five houses reveal the characters. The nun forced to leave and who sparked a popular movement for her stay. The gay who evokes abuse, prejudice. The owner of a house in the central area. Real estate speculation has reached Dom Pedrito and she is under pressure to sell the land. He is called crazy. It’s hard not to think about it Sonia Braga in Acquariumin Kleber Mendonça Filho. The man, illiterate and alone, who worked all his life on the farm, sleeping on the ground, with the dogs, and the children he managed to raise.
There is a character who has already died and the film reveals a disturbing fact: Dom Pedrito has a high incidence of cancer among the inhabitants. Effect of pesticides? The five have become the crazy, the weirdos of the city. They have undergone a sort of cancellation that Bruno now cancels, revitalizing and giving new meaning to old stories and memories. there is no need to summon Marcel Proust and the search for lost – and rediscovered – time to underline the universality of Bruno Gularte Barreto’s film. The film was made with refinement. It has layers. It stays with the sensitive viewer long after the screening.
