Only five films in the history of cinema have crossed the $ 2 billion mark at the box office and none have ever crossed the $ 3 billion mark, but “Avatar” could become the first to do so.
James Cameron’s 2009 film will have a sequel in December, “Avatar: The Water Way”. But it’s not the sequel that can break the record – even if it’s possible – but the original film itself.
“Avatar” is already the highest-grossing film in cinematic history and held that position for years until it was surpassed by “Avengers: Endgame”. However, a re-release in China helped the film regain its lead in the contention for the top spot in the world box office rankings.
Now, a new reissue organized by Disney in preparation for the sequel’s December debut could help “Avatar” rise even further in the charts and break yet another all-time high. The film will return to theaters in several countries around the world, including Brazil, and to be close to $ 3 billion, the feat can become a reality.
Prior to the re-release, “Avatar” grossed $ 2,847,397,339 at the box office, which means just under $ 153 million worth of tickets sold for $ 3 billion. While it’s still a pretty high price, especially for a re-release, there are indications that the film is very successful in its re-release.
The biggest one is that there is a huge appetite on the part of fans to see “Avatar” in theaters, both for the first time and for a reimagining in years. The 2021 re-release in China, which once again made the film the highest-grossing film in history, fetched a staggering $ 57.7 million.
With this achieved in just one country, long before the expectation generated by the release of “O Caminho da Água”, the expectation that the film will exceed $ 3 billion is not unjustified. There is expectation for the release of the sequel and, with a re-release in the United States and in several countries around the world, the $ 153 million no longer seems absurd.
An example of successful re-releases is “Star Wars: A New Hope,” which grossed $ 138.2 million in the United States alone in 1997.
Another point to consider is that Hollywood may simply have helped “Avatar” on this mission, with no major theatrical releases for much of September and October, with the next big release scheduled for “Black Adam” on September 21st. October. The absence of great newcomers in theaters could lead some of the audience to choose to review “Avatar” instead of watching a smaller version.
While there is a high chance that the sign will be hit, and easily too, there is no guarantee of raising $ 153 million at the box office with a re-release, but “Avatar” has already proven it can surprise and surpass the historic signs.
In addition to “Avatar” and “Avengers: Endgame”, “Titanic” (also by James Cameron), “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Avengers: Infinity War” have all exceeded $ 2 billion at the box office. “Spider-Man: No Homecoming” came close and it took less than $ 100,000 to reach the target.
“Avatar” will be released again in Brazilian theaters next Thursday, September 22nd.
