One of the most controversial projects on the TV market, the new series by Vince Gilligan, creator of “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” will arrive on Apple TV +, which has already secured two seasons of the as-yet-untitled project.

Gilligan’s new series is described as being in the drama genre and will star Rhea Seehorn taking the lead role. The series will not go through approval for a pilot episode, and Apple TV + has already secured two seasons, which represents a big commitment to production.

It will be produced by Gilligan’s longtime studio, Sony Pictures Television, and will follow the creator’s two critical and listening hits: “Breaking Bad,” which aired between 2008 and 2013, and the prequel “Better Call Saul.” “, whose final season came this year.

Seehorn, who will star in Gilligan’s new series, was nominated for a 2022 Emmy for her performance in “Better Call Saul” as attorney Kim Wexler.

In turn, Gilligan will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the new production. Former Sony Pictures TV president Jeff Frost, who oversaw the project before leaving the company’s executive role, will executive produce the series, alongside Diane Mercer. The production will be by Jenn Carroll of High Bridge.

Last month, Deadline magazine pointed out that this new Gilligan project has been the subject of heated controversy across channels and platforms, with eight or nine of them lining up to read the script and hear the tone of the show.

The project was subjected to several rounds of auctions, which sought to get the series ordered and was budgeted for between $ 13.5 million and $ 15 million per episode. The value is extremely high when it comes to dramatic productions, but it doesn’t come close to the more than $ 20 million worth of fantasy series like “The Rings of Power,” by Prime Video, and “House of the Dragon,” by HBO.

Apple TV + has already shown a lot of enthusiasm for the project and has been aggressive in trying to acquire it, and has been considered a strong candidate since the start of the controversy, mainly due to Gilligan’s relationship with Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht, who have worked on it. to his previous projects on Sony Pictures TV. According to Deadline magazine, Amazon and AMC, the broadcaster of “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul”, were also firm in the fight for the project.

“After 15 years, I realized it was time to stop writing anti-heroes… and who is more heroic than the brilliant Rhea Seehorn? It’s been a long time for her to have her show and I feel lucky to be able to work with her, “said Gilligan.” And what a beautiful symmetry to be with Zack Van Amburg, Jamie Erlicht and Chris Parnell! Jamie and Zack were the first two people to say yes to “Breaking Bad” many years ago. They have built a great team at Apple and my wonderful longtime partners at Sony Pictures Television and I am thrilled to do business with them. “

As usual for Gilligan, he didn’t reveal any details on the premise of the series, but on the magazine Deadline stresses that the story should move away from the world of drugs and crime explored in “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul”.

Compared to “The Twilight Zone”, the information points out that the new series takes place in our world with some changes, which distort reality and focus on people, exploring the human condition in an unexpected and surprising way. Provocative but not a moral tale, the series is also expected to carry Gilligan’s signature tone that infuses drama with humor.

In addition to “Better Call Saul”, Seehorn is known for roles in the series “Veep”, in the film “Voices and Shapes” and in the unreleased films “Linoleum” and “Wyrm”. She was also nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Series of Digital Short Films for “Cooper’s Bar,” which she also directed and executive produced.

The new project does not yet have a date to arrive on Apple TV +.
