Director Alejandro González Iñárritu, Oscar winner for “Birdman” and “The Revenant”, has revealed that he has cut his new film, “Bardo, False Chronicle of Some Truths” by 22 minutes after its little-celebrated world premiere at Venice.
“The first time I saw my film was with 2,000 people in Venice,” Iñárritu told IndieWire. “That was a good opportunity to see and learn about things that could benefit from being a little tighter, add a scene that wasn’t ready in time, and change the order of a thing or two. I’m thrilled.”
The length of the film, which originally reached 3 hours, was heavily criticized by the press, who found the work self-indulgent and, with a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, even mediocre. “The film is full of good things, but it lasts three hours and mostly full of itself,” Variety wrote after the Venice session.
Iñárritu guarantees that he has not read any reviews of his film. “I want to reiterate that I haven’t read a single review to keep my mental state sane,” he told IndieWire. “There is no one better than me who knows all the points that connect and how they can best connect.”
Thursday (23/9) the first trailer for “Bardo” was released, with surreal scenes to the sound of “I Am the Walrus”, the psychedelic hit of the Beatles.
Described as a “nostalgic comedy”, the production is the first spoken in Spanish by Iñárritu since “Amores Brutos” (2000). Written by the same director in collaboration with Nicolás Giacobone (screenwriter of “Birdman”), it follows a Mexican journalist played by Daniel Giménez Cacho (from “Quem Matou Sara?”), Who, during an existential crisis, returns to his hometown, where he needs to reconnect with his family, his memories and his own identity. In the process, he fights intensely against his own memories and regrets, while at the same time trying to make peace with the social transformations of Mexico.
This Friday (23/9), the film will be screened at the San Sebastián Film Festival. The streaming release is scheduled for December 16 on Netflix.
