With a budget of around $240 million, Avatar is one of the most expensive feature films in film history. It also holds the record at the box office with $2.847 billion internationally.
At the time, the feature film outsold Titanic by only 6 weeks. Avengers Endgame will break this record 10 years later. The superhero film would stay at No. 1 for two years before being dethroned again by Avatar, which regained the lead thanks to a re-release in China.
Collecting $2.797 billion, the Marvel blockbuster takes a solid second place behind Titanic ($2.201 billion). However, Avatar’s record has to be considered after taking into account inflation and ticket prices, especially for 3D and IMAX screenings, which pushed the ratings up.
Indeed, adjusted for inflation, Gone With the Wind is the biggest blockbuster in movie history with an equivalent receipt of $3.728 billion. Avatar is in second place with 3.273 billion, ahead of Titanic (3.099 billion).
