If Peter Mullan is the talk of the town today, it’s for his excellent portrayal of Dwarf King Durin III, father of Prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur), in The Rings: The Rings of Power, currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
But did you know that before handing over his duties to Durin, Peter Mullan used to be a part of another famous fantasy franchise? Indeed, he played Death Eater Corban Ixley in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 12 years ago.
Yaxley only appeared in one film, but his actions there were more than enough to wish him the worst. After the Minister of Magic was killed, he was one of the Death Eaters who took over the Ministry, which then became a very different institution during this time, persecuting muggle-born wizards.
When Harry, Hermione and Ron broke into the facility and later tried to escape, Yaxley gave chase and was the one who caught Ron before seriously injuring him. While his ally Dolores Umbridge ended up in Azkaban, it’s unclear what fate awaited Yaxley after defeating Voldemort, but one thing is for sure, he earned his place in Azkaban for life.
With his 97 credits, we can say that his translator Peter Mullan was not idle. In terms of cinema, the Scottish actor is known for his performance in “My Name is Joe” (1998) Ken Loach, “The Sisters of Magdalene” (2002), which he directed, “Children of Men” (2006) “Alfonso Cuarón, Tyrannosaurus”. (2011) by Paddy Considine (yes, King Viserys from Dragon House) or War Horse (2011) by Steven Spielberg.
On the TV side, the actor has starred in shows like Ozark, Mum, Top of the Lake and most notably played James Delos in Westworld. And if he’s talking about him today thanks to his role in Rings of Power, know that Durin III is a character you’ve already seen, very briefly…
Descendant of High King Durin I and bearer of the most powerful of the seven dwarven rings, Durin III was depicted as an old and wise king who ruled over the dwarven city of Khazad-Dum. He was then mistaken by many dwarves to be the reincarnation of the first Durin because of their resemblance.
The character of Durin III made a brief appearance in the prologue to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), when he received one of the seven rings given to the dwarves by his colleagues.
However, his role in the circles of power has expanded and now he is seen younger and during the reign of Khazad-dum.
Thus, the series offers Durin a more consistent role. We meet him as the patriarch and king of a prosperous kingdom.
Prince Durin IV’s father, Durin III, is represented there as a more traditional Dwarf than his son, willing to ally with other peoples. After Durin IV invites his friend Elrond (Robert Aramaio) to dinner and hears the elf’s proposal, he tells his father, who is skeptical and expresses a desire for seclusion.
Finally, after much persuasion from Elrond, he allows his people to begin building the great forge that Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) has requested.
At the same time, Durin IV discovers pieces of a new mineral in an old mine, which Elrond gives the name mithril. But after a well collapses that nearly kills several dwarves, Durin III stops the operation, angering his son.
The two soon make amends, and the elder Durin insists that his son go to Lyndon at Elrond’s request. You will find out the rest in the next episodes of the series.
