Tonight on TV: Meryl Streep is one of cinema’s greatest villains

Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: Comedy Comes to the Bottom of the World.

Often confined to the dramatic roles that would earn her an Oscar nomination, Meryl Streep is, however, trying to switch genres. In 2006, he joined the adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s novel The Devil Wears Prada. Directed by David Frankel, the film presents a disillusioned view of the world of fashion, where working relationships are sometimes governed by intimidation, superficiality and a complete lack of scruples.

Opposite Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep lends her features to the cruel and tyrannical Miranda Priestly, editor-in-chief of fashion magazine Runway. If her character strongly reminds us of Anna Wintour, the head of Vogue magazine, the actress decides not to play a pale copy, in particular she refuses to adopt a British accent. For her performance, she is also inspired by Diana Vreeland, former editor-in-chief of Vogue, Liz Tilbury, director of Harper’s Bazaar, but also by the presence of people such as Clint Eastwood and Mike Nichols. Even involved in the makeup of Miranda’s look, Meryl Streep mirrors the hairstyles of models Carmen Dell’Orefice, Helen Mirren and Christine Lagarde for this blend of elegance and authority.

If critics were mixed upon the film’s release, they were unanimous on its main interpretation. Even Anna Wintour, after attending the New York premiere, would have enjoyed Meryl Streep’s portrayal of Miranda. Against Employment won a Golden Globe for Best Actor (also nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA in the same category). Devil Wears Prada is one of the biggest commercial successes of his career with over 2 million admissions in France and over $326 million internationally on a $35 million budget.
