At 91, James Earl Jones, the legendary voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars series, is close to retirement. And, according to Vanity Fair, the actor would even have signed a contract allowing an artificial intelligence to replace him in the dubbing of the future works of the franchise that currently belongs to Disney.
Jones has reportedly signed with Ukrainian startup Respeecher so that the actor’s entire voice work file is stored and used by the AI to create new lines of dialogue with the iconic voice sound. This was also used in the Disney + Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
Respeecher is a tool that can “clone” a person’s voice using audio snippets recorded by them. By reintroducing dialogue lines recorded in over 40 years of Star Wars productions, the producers of Skywalker Doung were able to make Darth Vader’s voice in Obi-Wan sound more like that of the first films in the series, rather than the voice of Darth. That doesn’t mean James Earl Jones didn’t play any role in Obi-Wan Kenobi, however: the legendary actor still followed the production and provided hints on how villain Darth Vader should be featured in the series.
This isn’t the first time Lucasfilms has used Respeecher’s technology: in productions like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, the instrument has helped bring a younger voice to life for Luke Skywalker, digitally recreating Mark Hamill’s voice. passed with the help of old interviews and voiceovers made by the actor.
