“Star Wars” retires the voice of James Earl Jones in Darth Vader

Veteran actor James Earl Jones has decided to retire from the role of Darth Vader in “Star Wars”. He’s never played Darth Vader on screen, but he’s been the villain’s voice for over 40 years, since 1977, when the first movie came out.

At the age of 91, Jones signed a contract that allows his voice to be recreated by artificial intelligence for future voiceovers of the character, who will reappear in a new Disney + series, “Ahsoka”.

Although Darth Vader died in “Return of the Jedi”, released in theaters in 1983, the character remained active for several decades, always voiced by James Earl Jones. Guest list includes “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” (2005), “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016), “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” (2019) and the animated series “Star Wars Rebels “. “.” (2014-2016).

His recent appearance in “Obi-Wan Kenobi” had already received digital aids. As old age significantly altered his vocal register, the actor artificially recreated his dialogue, in a collaboration between the Lucasfilm producer and Ukrainian start-up Respeecher, which developed the technology.

Respeecher’s relationship with Lucasfilm began with the series “The Book of Boba Fett,” for which the start-up recreated the young voice of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker.

In “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, the collaboration was even greater, but he had the advice of Jones himself, who helped bring the artificial voice closer to his real lines.
