Last July, Crazy Rich Asians co-star Constance Wu revealed in a lengthy Twitter post that she attempted suicide in 2019 after a wave of harassment.
The comedian, who shot to fame in Welcome to the Huangs, faced a barrage of criticism after posting a tweet expressing his displeasure with the series being renewed for a sixth season.
Constance Wu made a new revelation about her experience on Fresh Off The Boat during a press conference at the Festival of the Atlantic in Washington, D.C. The actress did claim to be the victim of sexual harassment and intimidation by a producer, whose name she preferred to remain silent, while working on the ABC series.
“I haven’t said anything for a long time about the sexual harassment and bullying I experienced during the first two seasons of the show.“, he said. “After the first two seasons, once the show became successful, once I was no longer afraid of losing my job, that’s when I started to say “no” to harassment, “no” to bullying from that producer.“
“That’s when I thought, “You know what? I solved the problem. No one should know. I should not attack the reputation of this American manufacturer of Asian origin. I should not attack the reputation of the series.“
Constance Wu called the experience “traumatic“. He explained that it is the publisher of his memoir, titled make a scene, who encouraged her to open up about her experience on the sitcom. In a chapter titled “You Do What I Say,” Constance Wu describes a pattern of alleged harassment and intimidation by producer “M.”
He writes that he began by exercising complete control over her career, signing her to an agent she suggested and often interfering in her decisions. Gradually, he started commenting on her appearance and stalking her auditions, her agent and even her friends and parties she attended.
Wu alleges that this conduct led to an incident of physical harassment when he and “M” attended a basketball game together at the latter’s insistence. She claims he put his hand on her hip and finally ran his crotch over her jean shorts.
She writes that he rejected her advances and claims that this was an isolated incident. According to reports, their relationship became strained when he refused to go to a film festival he wanted to attend.
“I finally realized that it was important to talk about it“, he explained. This streak was historic for Asian Americans. It was the only network show in over 20 years where Asian Americans were front and center, and I didn’t want to tarnish the reputation of the only show that represented us.“
At the moment, the American channel ABC, which broadcast Welcome to Huangs, did not want to respond to these revelations.
