Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: Will Smith in superhero leather…worn on a bottle.
In 2008, Peter Berg took over from Hancock as director, with several directors – Michael Mann, Tony Scott, Jonathan Mostow and Gabriel Muccino – joining in succession.
After experimenting with genres as diverse as dark comedy (Very Bad Things), sports drama (Friday Night Lights), adventure comedy (Bienvenue dans la jungle) and political action films (Le Kingdom), he tackles the superhero movie. Or rather, those who break tradition.
Will Smith, accustomed to the roles of the lovable and sympathetic hero, excels in a different register as John Hancock, the irritable and alcoholic superhero who tries to restore his image thanks to a public relations specialist.
Between the action (the film has its share of spectacular scenes) and the redemption, Hancock It’s a quirky comedy that inventively defies genre codes and paves the way for other politically incorrect superheroes like Kick-Ass or Deadpool, more recently.
Despite mixed reviews, Hancock It grossed $629 million worldwide (on a $150 million budget). It is Will Smith’s fourth highest grosser at the worldwide box office behind Aladdin, Independence Day and Suicide Squad. In France, the film attracts more than 3 million viewers in cinemas.
