Athena on Netflix: Beautiful but empty? Subscribers respond to Romain Gavras’s shock film

Athena has been divisive since its release on Netflix. Viewers praise Romain Gavras but criticize his script for being too shallow.

In Athens, Romain Gavras imagined Greek tragedy in the heart of the city. After the death of his younger brother, who died as a result of alleged police intervention, Abdel (Dali Bensalah) finds his family torn apart.

Between his younger brother Karim’s desire for revenge and his older brother, dealer Moktar’s threatened business, he tries to calm the tension. Minutes later, the city of Athena is transformed into a fortified fortress, the scene of a family and collective tragedy.

Gavras’ camera plunges us into the heart of this chaos, with images that viewers find breathtaking or clip-worthy. The director spared no effort to get as close to the action as possible between sequential shots and the IMAX camera.

If the visual part all agree, Athena fishes on the bottom always according to subscribers. “Limited” dialogues, “not at all realistic” plot and “attractive” characters are to blame.

And to go further into the “suburban film” category, this viewer recommends Gagarin, which was presented at Cannes in 2020, alongside Alseni Bathilis, Lina Khudri and Jamil McCraven:
