With the retirement of James Earl Jones, Lucasfilm had to find a new way to create the lines of the dreaded Darth Vader. Understand
the veteran actor James Earl Jones is known worldwide as the voice of Darth Vaderfrom the franchise Star Wars. At the age of 91, however, despite being cheered by fans, the artist decided to retire, taking with him the interpretation of one of the greatest villains in the history of cinema. THE Lucasfilmthen, had to find a new way to represent Vader on the screens.
The problem is, for fans of Star Warsput the voice of another actor in place of that of James Earl Jones it wouldn’t be the same. Maybe that’s why the studio behind the saga decided that the voice of Darth Vader will now be recreated by a artificial intelligence (AI).
It is based on thousands of voice files from James — who ceded the copyright of the dubbings for the creation of the “robot” — that the technology analyzes the actor’s interpretations and creates the unpublished lines. Such AI has already been applied in the series Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022).

“For a character like Darth Vaderwhich can have about 50 lines in the series, we use about 10 thousand files”, revealed Matthew Woodthe sound editing supervisor for several productions in the world of Star Warsin an interview with the magazine vanity fair.
Second Matthewthe new speeches of Darth Vader are being produced by the Ukrainian start-up respec. Having already worked with Lucasfilm in creating a youth dialogue Luke Skywalker in Boba Fett’s Book(2021), the company has a very important differential to Wood: The output of the lines sounds very human, not robotic.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time that the Lucasfilm uses high technology to create sequences in Star Wars. In Rogue One (2016), for example, special effects made Grand Moff Tarkin return to the screens even 22 years after the death of Peter Cushing.
