AlloCiné: We’ve been waiting a long time here for the screenwriters, everything is starting to get interesting about Anais’s past and family. What was your reaction when you found out that this was going to be a big dramatic plot at school and when you found out what they were cooking for you?
Jules Sasost : I was very happy to learn a little more about Anais’ past. Especially since I thought it was going in the right direction. We’ve always known Anais to be very scholarly, very hardworking, and finally, it all explains a little bit of why and how. I thought that was very clever. And I was excited to know that I would have a few weeks with my new partner, Liam Hellman, who plays David. I couldn’t wait to tour with him to see how we would play together.
And since this arch started everything here for 3 seasons, it was important that the job was done well and that everything was “spectacular” enough for the public. With scenes intense enough to make the audience see Anais differently and grow attached to her. And David, who is a new character.
Did you know when Liam Helman arrived on set that his character was Anais’ ex-boyfriend?
Yes, I knew it from the beginning. Before I start working on the arch, I like to have a recap so that I’m prepared in advance and ready to go when I’m on set. So it was important to know this beforehand, especially since the two characters hide this link from everyone at the beginning of the story.
How did it go between you? Did Liam and you hit it off right away?
Honestly yes. I know that Liam only heard back about his casting four days before he arrived on set. At first I felt a little stressed and detached from it, which is normal because everything here is a big machine. We all know each other very well and it is not easy to go on this adventure after two years. But after a week he was behind us and we bonded really well.
And yet, we had no choice, because we play two characters who have known each other for years and who have something very strong. So there must have been that chemistry between us. And luckily he was there.
Before discovering this plot, did you ever imagine in your head that Anais’ past contained a wound, whatever it was?
At first, not really. I told myself that he was a very organized person, that everything had to be perfect. I tried to develop that without thinking about the character’s past. But when the writers gradually brought in quite a feminine side, with a lot of character, I said to myself that there must be something in her past that caused this, that made her have this character.
We know that adolescence is when we fake ourselves the most. I imagine that his parents were probably very strict people, very strict with him, and that he instilled this regularity and this very ruthless side of work. It remained within the family, but I did not imagine such a severe injury.
But I think the authors had a brilliant idea. The sibling relationship is very interesting to play. I have a big brother and a big sister myself, so it touches me closely. I already knew the brotherly love that can exist in a family, I was very touched as soon as I read it and thought it would be interesting to play.
Chef Meyer’s course forces her back to the past, Anais reverts to her past habits with David and engages in a game of “Cap or not cap”. It goes so far as to electrocute Double A and inadvertently injure Lysandro’s finger. Will he continue down this slippery slope? Will he continue to exhibit dangerous behavior?
Yes, this behavior will increase. Anais feels that Lisandro is jealous of David and their relationship is at its worst right now. The suggestions he made about the menu of his card, and especially about the dessert, which is close to his heart, will be rejected. With Salome, they no longer speak to each other. Enzo inevitably gets a bit of a part for Salome because Anais is pretty viral, she’s either all black or all white. And suddenly the only person who understands and agrees with Anais is David.
He really knows the whole story from A to Z. And Anais will continue to be under David’s influence and, after a while, she’ll say to herself, “Hell, we might as well keep going in this direction and see. What happens.” So she’ll go to things, in the kitchen or with David.
Not understanding why Anais spends a lot of time with David and why she is acting strange, Lisandro decides to break up with Anais. And David and Anais, feeling a little alone against everyone else, kiss each other. Does Anais still have feelings for her ex?
I think it’s the situation that does it. After that, he remains her first love, so when we meet her again, there are always feelings that resurface. Even if, often, it does not mix well and is doomed to failure. I think Anais will fall back into David’s arms because of the situation because he is hyper attentive to her. Coincidentally, he is a character who is very fond of Anais and who is very likable considering what he does for her. And we will continue to discover it in the remaining episodes.
And really, I think Anais lets herself go completely. He has a lot of love and affection for her, there’s a very strong bond that binds them together, but I think at this point in particular he’s a little bit lost with it all and doesn’t know where to go.
And what about David? Is he really being honest with Anais or is he manipulating her a bit to achieve his goals? Because we assume he’s hiding a secret, even if we don’t know exactly what it is yet…
David does not think so. All he wants is Anais’s happiness. He was very clear from the beginning that he wanted something to happen between them. He never hid his feelings. And seeing Anais again sparked something in him. But he doesn’t think in terms of manipulation. He does things in the moment and there is nothing negative behind it.
We have to wonder if Matthew is alive? Could this be the secret David is hiding?
Oh no, I can confirm that Mathieu is indeed dead, no question (laughs). Anais’s brother is no longer there, of course.
