Netflix: Fan-favorite animated series is going away

Warner’s new chief David Zaslav has decided to start the legendary studio on a new path – and it starts with some pretty drastic budget cuts. No titles are reserved: savings affect both new and existing production.

One notable victim was Batgirl. Indeed, the film directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilal Fallah will simply never see the light of day. The case of Final Space now suggests that the abolition of taxes is not over…

The sci-fi animated series, created in 2018, spans 3 seasons, airs until 2021 on TBS (in 2018), then on Adult Swim (from 2019), with international distribution by Netflix.

Final Space follows the adventures of Gary Goodspeed, a clumsy hero with a big heart who is willing to do anything to protect those he cares about against a terrifying Lord Commander who threatens to destroy the world and tries to capture Mooncake, a small green alien. .that he took under his wing.

A clever mix of Rick and Morty (in terms of style) and Futurama (in terms of humor), the show has been consistently celebrated by critics and the public. Alas Warner, its worldwide distributor, will now bury the project forever.

In the United States, Final Space was removed from the HBO Max streaming service on July 1, 2022. The series also disappeared from all other platforms in the following weeks. Sales of physical media such as Blu-rays, which exist for the first 2 seasons, have also been discontinued.

Show creator Olan Rogers took to Twitter to express his frustration, confirming that the series was part of Warner’s aforementioned tax deduction. And that means it may never be aired again and therefore lost forever. In total, Warner has already written off $825 million worth of content as part of the ongoing shakeup.

Along with the hashtag “#renewfinalspace”, the showrunner writes:This is the banner you all waved and it is a cry I can stand behind as I continue through this long dark night in search of the end of this story. The mention of “reinforced armor” is followed by photographs and a long letter detailing the case.

With Final Space, unlike other titles, there is at least an option to move outside of the United States, as Netflix owns the streaming rights for the international market and Warner has to honor that contract. The program is therefore still available on Netflix in France, among others, until the agreement expires. According to Whats-On-Netflix.com sources, this should be the case by December 16, 2023.

If true, the series will be available for another year before disappearing (from legal offerings) for good…

Although Olan Rogers said that he will never stop fighting for the show, his statement is not very optimistic. There’s little reason for this, as David Zaslav wasn’t thrilled with public opinion when Batgirl was canceled and made it clear that he didn’t want to get in the way of his radical journey – a journey that just doesn’t show up. A desire for a new manager, but a (definite?) question for the company as a whole.

In order to make the expected profits, Warner must ensure that the titles never see the light of day again and that the group does not spend more money on them. For a while it was even rumored that the Hollywood giant was going to destroy all the physical and digital copies it had access to. But this is probably not the case: he may face extremely high fines.

Beyond the utter absurdity that a published work that’s been available for years should just disappear like that, this case calls into question the very notion of a “golden age of streaming.” As good as it is to know that thousands of titles are at your fingertips, whether your favorite title will be available tomorrow, the day after, or two years from now is increasingly uncertain – and in that case, whether or not you’re subscribed. Even “purchased” a digital copy.
