The actress Anya Taylor-Joy has revealed that she originally wanted to play the mermaid in the movie ‘The Lighthouse’, the previous film of Robert Eggers.
The young woman has worked with Eggers on two feature films: her directorial debut, ‘The Witch’ and her upcoming release, ‘The Man from the North’, in which she works alongside Alexander Skarsgard Y Nicole Kidman among others. However, the actress did not appear in her second film, titled in English ‘The Lighthouse’, but of course she did not go for lack of her intention.
In statements to the media NMETaylor-Joy, who has appeared in works such as the series ‘Lady’s Gambit’ or ‘Last Night in Soho’, revealed how he asked the filmmaker for a role in the film they starred in Willem Dafoe Y Robert Pattinson. “I feel so lucky that Rob (Eggers) and I love each other so much and he would like me to come along on this journey.“Said the interpreter about joining the new story that will premiere this Friday.
“I was jumping because when he first called me and said, ‘Hey, I’m doing The Lighthouse,’ and there’s no role for you. There is a mermaid…“ I was like, ‘I can be the mermaid!’ but she was like, ‘You really shouldn’t be this mermaid in question, Anya.’ And I told her that she could be the seagull, or simply go out in the distance“.
Released in 2019, ‘El faro’ follows two isolated lighthouse keepers on a rocky island. During their stay, they both slowly descend into madness when a storm leaves them stranded on a remote island. In one explicit scene, Pattinson’s character is seen fantasizing about having sex with a mermaid (played by Valeria Karaman) while masturbating in a shed. Later scenes include nudity and mature-rated content.
In ‘The Northman’, Taylor-Joy plays the sorceress Olga. The film follows a young Viking prince named Amleth (Skarsgård) on a quest for him to avenge the murder of his father. Along the way he will meet Olga and they start a romantic relationship.
“I think it was very important that even though Rob deals with archetypes, anyone who survives in this world is pretty fierce.“, declared the young actress about her character. “One thing I really like about Olga and this relationship is that I don’t think there’s ever a moment where Amleth looks at her and thinks she’s not the same for what she represents and that she doesn’t have something to offer her. We talked a lot at the beginning about the kind of relationship of how we helped each other throughout the film so that it could be believable that bond and invest in it so that the ending had a great payoff. I love that they both play on each other’s strengths and respect each other, they’re both very curious about each other and really respect each other.“.
This film will not be the last time that Taylor-Joy meets with Eggers, since it seems that it will be in his new project: a new version of ‘Nosferatu’, although it is not an imminent project (and that has been years behind him) . The filmmaker recently questioned whether the film would materialize soon, given that there have been scheduling issues. In fact, Harry Styles has left the project due to not being able to square dates for his next album. We will be waiting for the news. For now, what is certain is that ‘The man from the North’ hits theaters this Friday.
