Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: Steven Spielberg’s first musical.
In the early 1960s, when musicals were in full decline in Hollywood, West Side Story turned things around by breaking away from genre codes. The joy of life gives way to dramaThe American Way of Life He is confronted with the difficulties of integrating Puerto Rican immigrants, and the dance sequences are mostly violence in which two rival gangs confront each other. Directed by Robert Weiss, this adaptation of the Broadway show won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Back in 2014, Steven Spielberg expressed his desire to make this musical that celebrated his childhood. A real challenge, even for a seasoned filmmaker like him, which he takes on after seven years. Between the homage to the original masterpiece (musical numbers, bright colors) and modernization (the interpretation of the sharks by Latin American actors, the addition of a new sequence as a tribute to Puerto Rican culture, the diversity of the main actors who can act and sing), the director emphasizes the contemporaneity of the legendary story, namely The fear of others and the social injustices that still plague America.
Out of 7 Oscar nominations, West Side Story leaves with the statuette for Best Supporting Actress, which was won by Ariana Debose, Anita’s Interpreter. A role for which Rita Moreno won the same award sixty years ago.
