Tomorrow’s World on Arte: How much is the NTM Starter Series worth?

Tomorrow’s World tells the story of the birth of the French hip-hop movement in the 1980s, from the birth of the legendary group NTM and the dancer and graffiti artist Lady V, to the journey of the pioneering DJ Dee Nast and his companion Beatrice, young Parisian rebels. and a rebel. This funny, rebellious and explosive saga with attractive characters covers the cultural revolution of young people in search of recognition.

Katell Quillévéré (Suzanne, Mend the Living), Hélier Cisterne (From Wounded Brothers), Vincent Poimiro and David Elkaim in collaboration with Laurent Rigulet are the creators of the mini-series The World of Tomorrow. The first two also provide six episodes of 52 minutes of production and participated in the writing of the script.

Anthony Bajon (Athena, Another World) and Melvin Boomer (Sage-Homme) star as Bruno and Didier, respectively, teenagers who become Cole Shen and Joystar, stars of the French rap group NTM.

Andranik Manet (The Holidays, The Eiffel) plays Daniel, the up-and-coming DJ de Nast, while Léo Challier (Serious Work) lends his qualities to Beatrice, the musician’s girlfriend. Laika Blanc-Francar plays Vivi, Bruno’s lover, better known by the artist name Lady V. Finally, Victor Bonelli (School of Life) brings Frank, alias DJ Détonateur S, to life.

The World of Tomorrow highlights the emergence of hip hop culture in 1980s France through a fun cast of young, passionate characters… Here, stories based in a not-so-distant reality burst with life and energy for a modern and refreshing on-screen result.

In order to materialize this ambitious project and make it as close as possible to what actually happened, the creators of the series immersed themselves in a large and thorough investigation. In direct collaboration with the real heroes of this story (Cole Sheen, Joystar, Dee Nasty….), hours of interviews were conducted, as well as hours of research on this era.

This colorful gang, whose members have a caustic sense of humor necessary for this existence, creates their own destiny in front of our eyes by experimenting with art. The newly emerging disciplines of breakdancing, graphing, scratching or rap then emerge as the essential and most obvious means of expression.

If there is a dimension to the survival order, the lightness and naivety also derive from their approach. Their swagger and thirst for self-assertion is unsettling, their enthusiasm contagious. A generational movement is coming to the world before our eyes.

The 1980s aesthetic and the looks of our heroes are more stylish than ever adding authenticity. We move easily with them in this unfamiliar and dangerous urban environment for a long time.

The grand prize at the closing ceremony of the 2022 edition of the Series Mania Festival, The World of Tomorrow is perfectly embodied. Anthony Bajon shows great sensitivity and Melvin Boomer is amazing. Andranik Mane gives his dreamy and determined hero a very attractive side. Laika Blanc-Francar and Léo Schall are perfect as badass young girls, brave and fighting against the prejudices of their environment.

Energetic, raw, funny, disturbing, this large-scale project is very successful and paints portraits of young people with bright futures.
