As the moment of filming of Princess Diana’s death in “The Crown” approaches, anxiety weighs on the production crew and cast.
The information was revealed by the magazine Deadlinewhich states that both the stars and the creative figures and producers would be “on edge” as they prepare to recreate the moment that led to the death of Princess Diana in a vehicle collision in Paris 25 years ago.
Elizabeth Debicki plays Princess Diana in this phase of “The Crown”, and most of the scenes in question will be shot in the next two weeks. Series creator Peter Morgan has previously made it clear to Deadline that the collision itself will not be filmed, which has now been confirmed again.
On August 31, 1997, Diana and her boyfriend, Dodi Al-Fayed, were in the passenger seats of a Mercedes-Benz driven by Henri Paul, a security guard at the luxury hotel The Ritz. Beside Paul was Trevor Rees-Jones, a security adviser to Dodi’s father, businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed.
Rees-Jones was the only survivor, while Dodi and Paul died instantly. Princess Diana was released from the rubble still alive, but she died a few hours later.
“We were afraid of getting to that point. The countdown is two weeks and, as we go slowly, it is fair to acknowledge that there is some anxiety; a palpable feeling of being a bit on the edge. I mean, there’s an explosive sensitivity around it, “a production source said.
As stated earlier, the source in question reiterated that the collision between a Mercedes-Benz and a Fiat at the entrance to the Ponte de l’Alma will not be filmed. “It’s the preparation: the car that leaves the Ritz after midnight with the paparazzi in pursuit and then the relapse with the British ambassador to France acting with the Foreign Office and then the subsequent constitutional fallout,” a source said.
According to Deadline, the sixth season episode will include then Prince Charles (Dominic West) who will arrive on a royal flight to collect Diana’s body and escort her to London. Contrasting scenes of Mohamad Al-Fayed (Salim Daw) will also be included, and the racism faced by the French authorities by the businessman after taking possession of his son’s coffin.
Netflix tries to present a very sensitive view of what happened and intends to prevent real-life paparazzi from getting close to filming. Any image at the entrance to the Mercedes-Benz tunnel that will emulate the car Diana was in could create problems with royal circles, particularly with the recent death of Queen Elizabeth II. Filming was also temporarily suspended following news of the monarch’s death.
Filming for the new season is expected to run until May or June 2023, in Paris, London and Spain. A premiere date has yet to be revealed, but a potential release is planned for November 2023, based on the arrival of previous seasons.
“The Crown” is a fantasy series, but largely inspired by real events involving the British crown.
The fifth season of the series has yet to premiere and will arrive on Netflix on November 9th.
